Morehead State Eagles Edge Lindenwood Lions in Tight Ohio Valley Conference Matchup
HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — In a tense Ohio Valley Conference rematch defined by defensive pressure and critical late-game execution, the Morehead State Eagles avenged a narrow loss from earlier in the month by holding off the Lindenwood Lions 69-63 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at E.T. Johnson Arena.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 768, was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 1, a 51-50 Lindenwood victory. This time, Morehead State’s disruptive defense and superior ball security proved to be the decisive factors in a contest where neither team led by more than eight points.
Lindenwood, which entered as a significant favorite according to advanced metrics, saw its four-game winning streak snapped, falling to 16-7 overall. Morehead State improved to 14-9, securing a pivotal conference split with the Lions.
The Eagles’ victory was forged on a foundation of forced mistakes. They harassed Lindenwood into 16 turnovers while committing only six themselves, translating that advantage into a 13-10 edge in points off turnovers. Morehead State also tallied nine steals, led by the relentless backcourt pressure of Laura Toffali and Landon Forbes.
Despite shooting nearly identically from the field — Lindenwood at 43.6% and Morehead State at 44.6% — the Eagles created more opportunities through their care of the ball and capitalized from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 22 three-point attempts compared to Lindenwood’s 7 of 23.
The most important stretch of the game unfolded in the final 90 seconds with Morehead State clinging to a 65-63 lead. After a defensive stop, the Eagles worked the clock before Josefine Enander sank a crucial three-pointer from the wing off an assist from Toffali with 59 seconds remaining, pushing the lead to five and forcing a Lindenwood timeout.
Lindenwood’s ensuing possession ended in a missed three-pointer by Aleshia Jones. Forbes secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled. She calmly sank both free throws with 16 seconds left to extend the lead to 67-63. After another Lindenwood miss, Forbes was fouled again and iced the game with two more from the line, accounting for the final margin.
The Lions were led by a dominant double-double from forward Brooke Coffey of St. Charles, Missouri, who scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 33 minutes. Guard Aleshia Jones of Leavenworth, Kansas, added a game-high 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ellie Brueggemann of Owasso, Oklahoma, contributed 16 points, but her late three-point attempts to tie could not find the mark.
Morehead State’s attack was balanced and efficient. Toffali, a guard from Villasanta, Italy, played all 40 minutes, scoring 16 points, dishing four assists and recording four steals. Enander, from Sodertalje, Sweden, provided a critical offensive spark off the bench with 15 points, including three three-pointers. Point guard Landon Forbes of Wichita, Kansas, orchestrated the offense with six assists and seven rebounds, and her four clutch free throws in the final seconds sealed the win. Post player Kate Dike of Kyiv, Ukraine, added 10 points, seven rebounds and a key block.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with Morehead State taking a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. Lindenwood found its rhythm in the second, exploding for 23 points to take a 32-29 lead into halftime. The Eagles responded with their best quarter after the break, outscoring the Lions 21-14 in the third to reclaim a 50-46 advantage heading into the final period, setting the stage for the tense finish.
Lindenwood’s interior presence was notable, matching Morehead State with 30 points in the paint and dominating the offensive glass 8-3, but the Lions’ inability to handle the Eagles’ defensive pressure ultimately tipped the scales.
Both teams continue OVC play next week. Lindenwood returns home to host SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday. Morehead State hits the road for a Thursday contest at Southeast Missouri State.
