Appalachian State Rallies Past South Alabama in Sun Belt Women’s Basketball

BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dramatic momentum shift and a tense final minute, the Appalachian State women’s basketball team erased a sluggish start to edge South Alabama 60-57 in a Sun Belt Conference contest on Thursday night at the Holmes Center.

A crowd of 401 watched the Mountaineers improve to 10-10 overall, reaching the .500 mark for the season, while the Jaguars fell to 9-11.

The game turned decisively in the second quarter. South Alabama, led by a dominant opening period from Daniela Gonzalez, had built a commanding 16-8 lead after the first ten minutes. The Jaguars’ defense was disruptive, forcing eight Appalachian State turnovers and holding the hosts to just three field goals in the quarter.

That control evaporated completely in the second frame. Appalachian State’s offense ignited, outscoring South Alabama 21-12 to take a 29-28 lead into halftime. The Mountaineers’ backcourt duo of Emma Smith and Daisia Mitchell spearheaded the rally. Smith, a guard from Vestavia Hills, Alabama, scored 10 of her 15 points in the first half, while Mitchell, a forward from Riverside, California, added 9 of her game-high 17 before the break. The period featured a 17-4 run by the Mountaineers that completely flipped the script.

The third quarter was a tightly contested battle, with Appalachian State extending its lead slightly to 46-42 heading into the final period. The Mountaineers maintained a narrow but persistent advantage throughout the fourth quarter, with their lead fluctuating between one and six points.

The final minute provided the night’s highest drama. With Appalachian State clinging to a 59-57 lead, South Alabama had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead. A critical sequence began when the Jaguars’ Amyah Sutton missed a three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining. Appalachian State secured the defensive rebound but turned the ball over on the ensuing inbound pass when Emma Smith’s pass was stolen by South Alabama’s Diawna Carter-Hartley with 32 seconds left.

After a timeout, South Alabama worked for a final shot. Sutton’s three-point attempt with 16 seconds left was off the mark, and a scramble for the offensive rebound resulted in a foul called on South Alabama’s Ronaltha Marc, sending Appalachian State’s Addie Biel to the free-throw line with 9 seconds remaining. Biel, a sophomore from Erie, Pennsylvania, made the first free throw to push the lead to three but missed the second.

South Alabama secured the rebound and called timeout with 4.9 seconds left to set up a final play. The inbounds pass went to Daniela Gonzalez, whose desperation three-point attempt from the top of the key as time expired hit the front of the rim and fell away, sealing the Mountaineer victory.

Gonzalez was the standout performer for South Alabama, finishing with 21 points, including three three-pointers, and adding three steals and a block in 38 minutes of action. Amyah Sutton contributed 13 points for the Jaguars. For Appalachian State, Daisia Mitchell’s 17 points and 8 rebounds were crucial, complemented by Emma Smith’s 15 points and three assists. Addie Biel provided key interior play off the bench with 8 points, including the decisive free throw, and two blocks.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably Appalachian State’s second-quarter surge. After being thoroughly outplayed in the first quarter, the Mountaineers’ 21-point outburst, fueled by defensive intensity and efficient scoring from Smith and Mitchell, erased South Alabama’s early momentum and established a lead they would never fully relinquish. That quarter transformed the game from a potential Jaguar road rout into a dogfight, setting the stage for the nail-biting finish.

Both teams return to Sun Belt play on Saturday. Appalachian State will host Louisiana-Monroe, while South Alabama travels to face James Madison.
