Roadrunners Rally Past Mustangs in Defensive Big West Battle
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — Chrishawn Coleman scored 23 points and Cal State Bakersfield overcame a disastrous first quarter with a relentless defensive effort to edge Cal Poly 62-58 in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Robert Mott Gymnasium.
The Roadrunners, who trailed by 17 points after the opening period, forced 25 Mustangs turnovers and converted them into 26 points to snap a three-game losing streak. Cal State Bakersfield improved to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play, while Cal Poly fell to 3-17 and 1-6.
The most critical phase of the game was unquestionably the second quarter, where the Roadrunners executed a stunning reversal. After being outscored 24-7 in the first quarter and shooting just 3 of 15 from the field, Cal State Bakersfield locked down defensively. They held the Mustangs to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting in the period while forcing nine turnovers.
A 12-0 run, fueled by steals and transition opportunities, brought the Roadrunners back into the game. Tianna Sutherland, who finished with eight points, hit two three-pointers during the surge, and Coleman’s driving layup with 5:50 left in the half capped the run and cut the deficit to 26-21. The Roadrunners outscored Cal Poly 19-9 in the quarter to go into halftime down just 33-26, having completely shifted the momentum.
Cal Poly’s early dominance was spearheaded by Vanessa McManus and Dulci Vail, who combined for 20 first-half points. The Mustangs scored 24 points in the paint in the opening quarter, exploiting the Roadrunners’ interior defense. But the offensive well dried up as Bakersfield increased its defensive pressure, finishing the game with 16 steals.
The Roadrunners continued their methodical comeback in the third quarter, finally drawing even at 40-40 on a pair of free throws by Coleman with 3:44 remaining. The teams traded baskets until a steal and two more Coleman free throws in the final seconds gave Bakersfield its first lead since the opening minute, 44-42, heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter was a tense affair featuring six lead changes. Cal Poly’s Vail, who finished with 17 points, gave the Mustangs a 47-45 lead with a pair of free throws at the 6:03 mark. Coleman answered immediately with a jump shot to tie it, and after a Mustangs turnover, Dae’Jaidence Kincade’s putback layup put Bakersfield ahead for good at 49-47 with 5:15 to play.
Cal Poly stayed within one possession for the remainder of the game. A jumper by McManus, who led all scorers with 18 points, made it 55-53 with 2:16 left. The Mustangs had a chance to tie or take the lead after a Roadrunners turnover, but Charish Thompson committed an offensive foul with 1:29 remaining.
Bakersfield’s Marley Langi, who scored six points, hit two crucial free throws with 2:37 left and then sealed the game at the line in the final seconds. After McManus missed a layup that would have tied the game at 60 with 24 seconds left, Langi grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled. She made the first of two free throws to extend the lead to 61-58. Following a Cal Poly timeout, the Mustangs’ Arissa Garcia turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play, and Langi was fouled again, making one more free throw for the final margin.
Despite being outrebounded 38-31 and shooting just 32.2% from the field, the Roadrunners’ defensive activity proved decisive. They attempted 30 free throws, making 21, and dished out 16 assists on 19 made field goals. Morgan Hawkins added 10 points for Bakersfield.
Cal Poly, which was projected as a significant favorite by advanced metrics, shot 41.2% from the field but was undone by its ball-handling. The Mustangs managed only seven assists against their 25 turnovers. McManus added seven rebounds to her 18 points, and Alana Goosby contributed six points, three assists and a block.
The announced attendance was 312. Cal State Bakersfield travels to face UC Davis on Saturday, while Cal Poly hosts UC Riverside.
