Minnesota Routs Penn State in Big Ten Women’s Basketball Matchup
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — The Minnesota Golden Gophers used a dominant first quarter and a balanced offensive attack to cruise past the Penn State Lady Lions 87-66 in a Big Ten women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Bryce Jordan Center.
Minnesota, which improved to 15-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play, seized control from the opening tip. The Golden Gophers opened the game on a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Tori McKinney just 10 seconds into the contest. Penn State, struggling to find any offensive rhythm, missed its first five shots and committed two turnovers before finally scoring nearly three minutes into the game.
The first quarter set the tone, with Minnesota building a 19-12 lead. The Golden Gophers shot efficiently and forced the Lady Lions into difficult possessions, holding them to just 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting. The early cushion proved critical as Penn State mounted a challenge in the second period.
The Lady Lions, now 7-15 overall and 1-8 in the Big Ten, found a spark behind guard Kiyomi McMiller. After being held scoreless in the first quarter, McMiller erupted for 14 points in the second, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers and attacking the basket. Penn State outscored Minnesota 26-23 in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 42-38 at halftime. Moriah Murray added nine points in the frame for the Lady Lions, whose offensive rating improved markedly after a sluggish start.
However, any momentum Penn State carried into the locker room was swiftly extinguished after the break. Minnesota reasserted its defensive intensity and offensive execution in the third quarter. The Golden Gophers opened the second half on a 7-0 run, stretching their lead back to double digits. They outscored Penn State 25-17 in the quarter, holding the Lady Lions to 35% shooting while committing only one turnover themselves.
The most important sequence of the game came early in that third quarter. With Penn State threatening after closing the gap to just four points, Minnesota’s defense ignited a decisive run. A steal by Sophie Hart led to a transition opportunity, and Mara Braun drained a 3-pointer. On the ensuing possession, Braun blocked a McMiller 3-point attempt, symbolizing the renewed defensive pressure. The Golden Gophers held Penn State without a field goal for over three minutes during this stretch, pushing their lead back to 13 points and effectively ending the competitive phase of the game.
Minnesota’s offensive balance was overwhelming. Four players scored in double figures, led by Tori McKinney’s 23 points. Mara Braun, the team’s top star, added 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks, showcasing her all-around game after a quiet scoring performance in her previous outing. Amaya Battle recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Sophie Hart contributed 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Golden Gophers were exceptionally efficient, shooting 51.5% from the field and a perfect 9 for 9 from the free-throw line. They also connected on 10 of 22 attempts from 3-point range. Their ball security and distribution were superior, as evidenced by an 8-3 advantage in assists and an 8-13 edge in turnovers.
Penn State was led by McMiller’s 23 points, all coming in the final three quarters. Moriah Murray added 16 points. The Lady Lions shot just 35.4% from the field and, despite making 12 3-pointers, could not overcome Minnesota’s efficiency or their own struggles with ball movement, tallying only three assists as a team.
Defensively, Minnesota’s length and activity were disruptive, registering eight steals and six blocks. Penn State’s offensive rating of 92.0 on 72 possessions underscored a night of stagnant offense against a disciplined Golden Gopher defense.
The announced attendance was 1,546. Minnesota next hosts Purdue on Sunday. Penn State travels to face Purdue next Wednesday.
