Presbyterian at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — The Winthrop Eagles look to get back to .500 in Big South Conference play when they host the struggling Presbyterian Blue Hose in a women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Winthrop Coliseum.

The Eagles (10-11) have lost three straight after a three-game conference winning streak, most recently falling 74-60 at High Point on Jan. 21. Winthrop has relied heavily on the scoring of guard Amourie Porter, who is averaging 20.1 points over her last seven games. She scored 25 points in wins over South Carolina Upstate and UNC Asheville earlier this month.

Presbyterian (3-17) enters on a six-game losing skid, with its last victory a 50-46 defensive struggle at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 21. The Blue Hose are coming off a narrow 77-73 home loss to Charleston Southern on Jan. 23, where Ja’Cia Cunningham scored 22 points and Krystal Haddock added 16.

Haddock has been a bright spot for Presbyterian, averaging 12.1 points over her last seven contests. She posted a season-high 18 points and eight rebounds in a loss at Longwood on Jan. 3.

Winthrop won both meetings last season, including a 68-49 victory at home. The Eagles have dominated the recent series, winning 12 of the last 13 matchups.

A key for Winthrop will be rediscovering its defensive form after allowing an average of 80.3 points during its current losing streak. Presbyterian, which ranks last in the Big South in scoring offense at 49.2 points per game, has been held under 60 points in 14 of its 20 games.

The game is part of a tight middle section of the Big South standings, where Winthrop currently sits in sixth place. Presbyterian remains at the bottom of the conference, seeking its first league win of the season.

Following this game, Winthrop travels to face Radford on Saturday, while Presbyterian visits High Point. The two teams will meet again in Clinton, South Carolina, on Feb. 18.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
