Radford Dominates South Carolina Upstate in Big South Women’s Basketball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — In a defensive clinic that bordered on the historic, the Radford Highlanders overwhelmed the South Carolina Upstate Spartans 67-29 in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at the G.B. Hodge Center.
The most important part of the game was its opening act, a first-quarter performance of suffocating defense by Radford that effectively decided the contest before it had truly begun. The Highlanders held the Spartans to a single field goal in the period, racing to a 19-2 lead from which South Carolina Upstate would never recover.
Radford set the tone immediately. After South Carolina Upstate won the opening tip, the Spartans missed their first three shot attempts. Radford’s Cate Carlson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Virginia Beach, Virginia, grabbed a defensive rebound and promptly sank a 3-pointer on the other end just 41 seconds into the game for the first points. The Highlanders’ defense then forced a flurry of Spartan turnovers and missed shots, allowing Radford to build a 17-0 run before USC Upstate’s Zoe Richardson finally connected on a jump shot with 1:05 left in the quarter to avoid the shutout.
The Highlanders’ defensive pressure never relented. They held the Spartans to 10 points in each of the second and third quarters and just seven in the fourth. The 29 total points allowed by Radford marked one of the most dominant defensive showings in the program’s recent history.
Carlson led all scorers with 17 points, showcasing her range with multiple 3-pointers. She was complemented by a balanced Highlander attack. Joi Williams, a 5-7 guard from Leesburg, Virginia, added 11 points, while forward Georgia Simonsen, a 6-1 sophomore from Fairfax, Virginia, controlled the paint with 13 points and two blocks. Angelina Nice contributed nine points and two blocks off the bench.
South Carolina Upstate, which struggled offensively all night, was led by Cassie Gallagher’s seven points. The Spartans’ Kinley Paterson, a guard from Perth, Australia, provided defensive energy with two steals and two blocks but managed only four points.
With the victory, Radford improved to 14-9 overall and continued its strong run in conference play. The loss dropped South Carolina Upstate to 6-16.
The game was a stark contrast to the national statistical projection, which gave Radford a 77.9% chance to win. The Highlanders not only secured the expected victory but did so with a margin that underscored their defensive prowess.
Radford’s recent form has been formidable, with the win marking their third straight and fourth in their last five Big South contests. The Highlanders will look to continue that momentum when they host Winthrop on Saturday.
South Carolina Upstate, mired in a three-game losing streak, will seek to regroup at home against Charleston Southern, also on Saturday.
An announced crowd of 219 at the Hodge Center witnessed a game defined by one team’s defensive execution from the opening tip, a quarter of basketball that rendered the remaining 30 minutes a formality.
