Campbell Controls Hampton in Wire-to-Wire Victory

HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — Gianni Boone scored 21 points and Campbell used a dominant defensive first half to build an insurmountable lead, cruising to a 58-43 victory over Hampton in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night at the Convocation Center.

The Fighting Camels, now 12-8 overall, held the Pirates to just five points in the opening quarter and 16 for the entire first half, taking a 31-16 lead into the break. Hampton’s offensive struggles were profound, shooting a frigid 2 for 19 from three-point range for the game and managing an offensive rating of just 70.8 points per 100 possessions.

Campbell’s defense set the tone immediately. After Hampton’s Aisha Dabo won the opening tip, the Pirates missed their first six field goal attempts and committed three turnovers before Olivia Smith finally connected on a pull-up jumper more than four minutes into the game. By the time Kayla Lezama hit a three-pointer for Hampton at the 4:46 mark of the first, Campbell had already built a 6-0 lead behind early inside buckets from N’na Konate.

The Fighting Camels closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run, capped by a Ciara Alexander layup with 15 seconds left, to take a 15-5 advantage. The Pirates never recovered from that initial drought. Campbell extended its lead to 20 points late in the second quarter after a steal by Hadleigh Dill led to a Gianni Boone fast-break layup, making it 31-11. Boone, a guard from Washington, D.C., was the engine for Campbell, adding three assists and two blocks in 36 minutes of action.

Hampton, which fell to 8-10, showed brief signs of life after halftime. A 10-2 run spanning the third and fourth quarters, fueled by Dabo and Lezama, cut the deficit to 38-28 with 9:49 remaining. Dabo, from Queens, N.Y., led the Pirates with 12 points.

Campbell responded decisively. On the ensuing possession, Olivia Tucker found Jasmine Nivar for a three-pointer. After a Hampton turnover, Tucker connected from deep herself, pushing the lead back to 16 points and effectively extinguishing the rally. Tucker, a guard from Durham, N.C., finished with eight points and three assists.

The Fighting Camels controlled the game through interior presence and rebounding. They grabbed 16 offensive rebounds leading to 13 second-chance points, while Hampton managed only seven offensive boards. Konate, a 6-foot-3 forward from Lausanne, Switzerland, was pivotal in that effort, scoring 10 points and relentlessly attacking the glass on both ends.

Hampton’s Le’Asia Foreman of Norfolk, Va., scored eight points, all in the second half, and Kayla Lezama of Boston added nine. But the Pirates could not overcome their shooting woes, finishing at 33.3% from the field overall and a mere 10.5% from beyond the arc. They also committed 11 turnovers, which Campbell converted into 11 points.

Campbell, which entered the game as a significant favorite according to predictive metrics, was efficient if not spectacular offensively. The Fighting Camels posted an offensive rating of 95.6, shot 38.6% from the field, and made 9 of 12 free throws. Their ball security was an issue with 14 turnovers, but their defense more than compensated.

The most critical phase of the game was unquestionably the opening quarter. Campbell’s defensive intensity completely disrupted Hampton’s offensive sets, forcing difficult shots and creating a significant early deficit from which the Pirates, given their shooting struggles throughout the night, were never equipped to mount a full comeback. The 15-5 lead after ten minutes provided a cushion that allowed Campbell to manage the game comfortably for the final three quarters, despite Hampton’s occasional pushes.

Attendance was 578 at the Convocation Center. Campbell next hosts UNC Wilmington on Sunday. Hampton remains at home to face Elon on Sunday.
