Delaware Stuns Middle Tennessee With Dominant Defensive Performance

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — Ande’a Cherisier scored 18 points and Delaware’s defense delivered a historically stifling third quarter to propel the Blue Hens to a 61-48 upset victory over Middle Tennessee in a Conference USA women’s basketball game Thursday night at Murphy Athletics Center.

Entering as heavy underdogs against a Blue Raiders squad with a 94.6% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, Delaware authored a defensive masterpiece, particularly in a decisive 10-minute stretch after halftime. The Blue Hens (8-10, 1-2 CUSA) held Middle Tennessee (10-9, 2-2) to just two points in the third quarter, the fewest points the program has allowed in any quarter this season, turning a nine-point halftime lead into an insurmountable 23-point advantage.

The game’s complexion shifted entirely in that period. Leading 35-23 at the break, Delaware opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run, capped by a Lay Fantroy three-pointer, to extend its lead to 44-25. The Blue Raiders’ offensive struggles reached a nadir as they missed all 13 field goal attempts in the quarter, their only points coming on a pair of Alayna Contreras free throws with 4:41 remaining. Middle Tennessee shot 0-for-13 from the floor, including 0-for-6 from beyond the arc, and committed four turnovers in the quarter, managing a scoring rate of just 20 points per 100 possessions.

Delaware’s offense, while not prolific, was efficient enough to capitalize. The Blue Hens shot 4 of 12 in the quarter but connected on two three-pointers and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to outscore the hosts 16-2, taking a 51-25 lead into the final period.

The defensive stand was the culmination of a game-long effort that frustrated Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders finished the night shooting 29.8% from the field (17 of 57) and a dismal 15.4% from three-point range (4 of 26). They committed 17 turnovers, which Delaware converted into 18 points.

Cherisier, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Baltimore, Maryland, was the offensive catalyst for Delaware, scoring her 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting while adding five offensive rebounds and a block in 34 minutes. Ella Wanzer added 12 points, all from beyond the arc, hitting four three-pointers.

Middle Tennessee mounted a frantic but futile comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, outscoring Delaware 23-10 behind 11 points from Contreras, who led all scorers with 19. The Blue Raiders used a 15-2 run over a five-minute span, fueled by six points from reserve center Nicole Dominguez Gureeva, to cut the deficit to 53-40 with 4:12 to play. Dominguez Gureeva, a 6-foot-10 freshman from Spain, provided a late spark with nine points and seven rebounds in just 11 minutes.

The Blue Hens, however, stemmed the tide with key baskets. After the lead was trimmed to 13, Safi Kolliegbo hit a driving layup and, following a Middle Tennessee score, Wanzer sank her fourth three-pointer with 1:28 left to push the advantage back to 58-46, effectively sealing the game.

Delaware’s backcourt of Kailah Correa and Fantroy combined for 12 points and seven assists while helping pressure Middle Tennessee’s guards. The Blue Hens shot 38.6% overall but were an effective 9 of 21 from three-point range and committed only 13 turnovers.

The victory marks a significant road win for first-year Delaware coach Sarah Jenkins and snaps a two-game conference losing streak. The Blue Hens had lost three of their last four entering the contest. For Middle Tennessee, the loss is a stark setback after a dominant 88-51 win over New Mexico State in their previous home game. The Blue Raiders’ offensive rating of 69.4 points per 100 possessions was among their lowest outputs of the season.

The announced attendance at the Murphy Athletics Center was 3,605.

Delaware continues its road trip with a game at Western Kentucky on Friday. Middle Tennessee looks to rebound at home against Liberty on Saturday.
