Williams Leads Radford Women Past Longwood in Big South Matchup
FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — The Radford Highlanders, fueled by a dominant 25-point first quarter and a standout performance from guard Joi Williams, seized control early and never relinquished it in a 78-63 victory over the Longwood Lancers in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at the D.N. Dedmon Center.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded from the opening tip. Radford, playing with palpable energy in front of a home crowd of 591, immediately imposed its will. Williams, a 5-foot-7 guard from Leesburg, Virginia, set the tone, scoring the game’s first five points on a jumper and a three-pointer assisted by Georgia Simonsen. While Longwood’s Frances Ulysse answered with a layup, the Lancers struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Radford’s active defense.
The Highlanders’ first-quarter explosion was a model of efficiency and opportunism. They shot 10 of 16 from the field in the period, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, while forcing six Longwood turnovers. Williams was the catalyst, pouring in 11 points in the quarter, but she was supported by a fluid offense that produced five assists. Angelina Nice capped the period with a three-pointer in the final minute, giving Radford a 25-23 lead after one. This early burst established a tempo and a deficit from which Longwood, despite a valiant effort, could never fully recover.
The Lancers, who entered the game with a 13-5 record and a 59.5% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, saw their potent offense stymied. After scoring 23 points in the first, they managed only eight in the second quarter on 3-of-15 shooting. Radford’s defense, which finished with 13 steals and six blocks, consistently disrupted passing lanes and challenged shots. Simonsen, a 6-foot-1 forward from Fairfax, Virginia, was a force inside with three blocks, altering countless other attempts.
Radford’s lead ballooned to 43-31 by halftime and grew to as many as 18 points in the second half. Every time Longwood threatened to build momentum, the Highlanders had an answer, often from Williams or Simonsen. Williams finished with a game-high 23 points in 33 minutes, while Simonsen posted a stat line of 18 points, three assists and three blocks. Nice facilitated the offense masterfully, adding 15 points and a game-high five assists.
Longwood was led by Jesstynie Scott’s 12 points, but the team shot just 33.3% from the field. The Lancers’ offensive rating of 77.2 on 82 possessions underscored their struggles against a disciplined Radford defense that limited clean looks and capitalized on 19 Longwood turnovers. Bench contributions from London Harvey and Lili Booker, who each scored seven points, provided brief sparks but were not enough to mount a sustained comeback.
With the win, Radford improves to 12-9 overall and evens its conference record, building momentum after a decisive road win at Winthrop in its previous outing. Longwood falls to 13-6 and will look to rebound from consecutive conference losses, having fallen to High Point last Saturday.
Radford’s comprehensive performance was reflected in the key metrics. The Highlanders outshot the Lancers 50.8% to 33.3% from the field, won the assist battle 13-7, and matched Longwood’s physicality by committing an identical 19 turnovers. The victory was a testament to a focused game plan executed from the opening possession, with the first-quarter surge proving insurmountable.
Longwood next hosts South Carolina Upstate on Saturday. Radford returns to action the same day, welcoming UNC Asheville to the Dedmon Center. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Farmville, Virginia, on Feb. 4.
