Army Women Roll Past Bucknell in Patriot League Matchup
WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Army women’s basketball team used a dominant second-quarter surge to seize control and never looked back, dispatching Bucknell 64-44 in a Patriot League matchup Wednesday night at Christl Arena.
The Black Knights, improving to 15-3 overall and solidifying their standing atop the conference, turned a narrow first-quarter lead into a commanding halftime advantage with a 23-5 second period. That decisive stretch effectively decided the contest, as the Bison (4-13) could not muster a sustained offensive response against Army’s disciplined defense.
The game began competitively, with Army holding a 15-12 edge after the opening quarter. Bucknell’s Tuana Coskun, a sophomore from Istanbul, Turkey, kept her team close with eight early points. The complexion of the game changed entirely in the second frame. Army’s defense locked down, forcing a series of Bucknell turnovers and contested misses. The Bison managed only two field goals in the quarter, a stark contrast to Army’s efficient and balanced attack.
Army guard Reese Ericson, a sophomore from Lake Oswego, Oregon, ignited the run with a pull-up jumper and a three-pointer, while senior forward Brooke Wilson of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, consistently found gaps in the Bucknell defense. The Black Knights closed the half on a 14-2 run, capped by a Soleil Montrose jumper just before the buzzer to take a 38-17 lead into the locker room.
The second half saw Army maintain its comfortable margin. Bucknell showed brief signs of life in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 16 points behind Coskun and Hope Masonius, but could not string together enough stops to mount a serious threat. Army’s lead never dipped below 18 in the final quarter as both teams emptied their benches.
Camryn Tade led all scorers for Army with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding two blocks in 25 minutes. Ericson finished with 14 points, and Wilson contributed 12 points and three assists. The Black Knights excelled at the free-throw line, converting 13 of 14 attempts, and outrebounded Bucknell 38-28, including a decisive 9-2 advantage on the offensive glass.
Coskun led Bucknell with 16 points, while Masonius, a freshman from Spring Lake, New Jersey, added 10. The Bison struggled mightily from beyond the arc, hitting just 1 of 11 three-point attempts, and were hampered by 16 turnovers, which Army converted into 19 points.
Statistically, the game underscored Army’s efficiency. The Black Knights scored 64 points on 65 possessions for an offensive rating of 99.0, while Bucknell managed only 44 points on 61 possessions, an offensive rating of 71.7. Army’s ability to generate higher-quality shots—aided by 13 assists against nine turnovers—and capitalize from the charity stripe proved to be the fundamental difference.
The victory extends Army’s winning streak to three games as they continue a strong campaign that has seen them lose only to Lehigh, Oregon, and Eastern Kentucky this season. Bucknell, meanwhile, dropped its fourth consecutive contest and will look to regroup quickly in a tight Patriot League schedule.
An announced crowd of 546 at Christl Arena watched the Black Knights execute a game plan that heavily favored them according to advanced metrics; pregame projections gave Army a 93.1 percent probability of victory, a forecast borne out by the lopsided second quarter and final margin.
The most important part of the game was unequivocally the second quarter. Trailing by just three points after a back-and-forth first period, Bucknell’s offense completely disintegrated against Army’s intensified defensive pressure. The Bison committed seven turnovers in the quarter and made only 2 of 13 field goal attempts. This offensive drought allowed Army to unleash a 23-5 run, transforming a tense, single-possession game into a 21-point halftime blowout. This quarter established the game’s trajectory, as Bucknell’s spirit and strategy were broken by Army’s relentless, half-court defensive execution and ability to score in transition off those forced mistakes. The remainder of the game became a formality, with Army managing its large lead and Bucknell unable to engineer a comeback of such magnitude.
Army next travels to face service academy rival Navy on Saturday. Bucknell returns home to host Loyola Maryland, also on Saturday.
