Central Michigan Women Cruise Past Akron in MAC Matchup

AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup defined more by grit than grace, the Central Michigan Chippewas methodically dismantled the Akron Zips 74-53 on Wednesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.

The game was never a shootout, but rather a defensive slog where Central Michigan’s persistent pressure and superior rebounding gradually wore down the home team. The Chippewas, now 11-6 overall, led wire-to-wire, holding Akron to a season-worst offensive performance that dropped the Zips to 3-16.

Central Michigan established control early, closing the first quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 16-12. The margin hovered around ten points for much of the first half, as both teams struggled with turnovers and inefficient offense. The Chippewas took a 33-27 lead into halftime, a advantage built not on hot shooting but on a 13-5 edge in offensive rebounds that provided crucial second chances.

The most pivotal stretch of the game came late in the third quarter. With Central Michigan leading 43-35 and the Zips showing faint signs of life, the Chippewas unleashed a decisive 11-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. The surge was fueled by their defensive identity, forcing three Akron turnovers during the span. Demetria Prewitt converted a layup to end the third, and Madi Morson opened the fourth with a jump shot, extending the lead to 54-35 and effectively sealing the outcome with over nine minutes to play.

Morson, a 5-foot-8 guard from Canton, Michigan, was the offensive catalyst for Central Michigan, scoring a game-high 23 points in 31 minutes. She attacked the rim consistently and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Forward Nekhu Mitchell provided essential support with 11 points and a team-high 7 rebounds, while Prewitt added 12 points and 3 assists.

For Akron, the offensive struggles were profound. The Zips shot a dismal 1-for-20 from three-point range, a 5% clip that stifled any hope of a comeback. They committed 20 turnovers, which Central Michigan converted into 19 points. Guard Shaena Brew led Akron with 16 points and 3 assists, and forward Keiryn McGuff added 9 points and played a team-high 38 minutes, but they fought an uphill battle against a more physical opponent all night.

The statistical disparity told the story of Central Michigan’s formula for victory. The Chippewas dominated the glass, outrebounding Akron 44-31, with their 13 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second-chance points. While Central Michigan shot only 45.2% from the field and 27.3% from deep, they attempted eight more shots than Akron, a direct result of their rebounding and ability to force turnovers. Defensively, they held the Zips to 35.2% shooting and an offensive rating of just 66.7 points per 100 possessions.

Central Michigan’s defense was particularly effective in the third quarter, limiting Akron to 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting. The Zips went nearly six minutes without a field goal during the Chippewas’ game-breaking run.

The victory extends Central Michigan’s winning streak to three games as they continue to solidify their position in the MAC standings. Akron, meanwhile, has now lost four consecutive contests and will look to find answers for an offense that has consistently sputtered against conference competition.

An announced crowd of 893 watched the game, which saw Interstat’s ELO system’s projection of an 83.9% win probability for Central Michigan hold true.

Central Michigan travels to face Western Michigan on Saturday. Akron’s next contest is at Bowling Green on Jan. 28.
