Seton Hall Uses Dominant Third Quarter to Pull Away From Providence
NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter surge propelled the Seton Hall Pirates to a decisive 73-57 victory over the Providence Friars in a Big East women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Prudential Center.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 879, was effectively decided in a 10-minute span after halftime. Leading by just four points at the break, Seton Hall erupted for 30 points in the third quarter, overwhelming a Providence team that struggled with ball security and offensive flow throughout the evening.
The most important part of the game unfolded decisively in that third period. After a relatively competitive first half, Seton Hall emerged from the locker room with intensified defensive pressure. The Pirates forced a series of Providence turnovers, converting them into easy transition opportunities. A 17-4 run midway through the quarter, fueled by steals and efficient scoring, stretched a narrow 34-30 lead into a commanding 51-34 advantage. Providence committed 20 turnovers in the game, leading to 13 Seton Hall steals, and the Friars’ offense never recovered from the Pirates’ blitz.
Savannah Catalon led all scorers with 19 points for Seton Hall, showcasing her offensive versatility. Mariana Valenzuela added 15 points and a game-high four defensive rebounds, while Zahara Bishop contributed 12 points. The Pirates’ ball movement was superior, tallying 13 assists to Providence’s five. Shailyn Pinkney facilitated the offense masterfully, dishing out nine assists.
Providence was led by Sabou Gueye, who finished with 15 points, four assists and three steals. Teneisia Brown provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, but the Friars’ offensive execution was hampered by the relentless Pirate defense. Providence shot just 43.1 percent from the field and a meager 28.6 percent from three-point range.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair. Providence held an early lead, but Seton Hall closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 15-10 edge. The Friars responded in the second quarter, chipping away and trailing just 28-26 at intermission. The competitive nature of the opening 20 minutes made the Pirates’ third-quarter explosion all the more definitive.
Statistically, Seton Hall’s efficiency told the story. The Pirates scored 73 points on 72 possessions for an offensive rating of 102.1, while Providence managed only 57 points on 74 possessions, a rating of 77.4. Seton Hall also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 17 of 20 attempts compared to Providence’s 9-of-14 performance.
With the win, Seton Hall improved to 14-5 overall and continued its strong play in conference action. The Pirates have now won three of their last four games. Providence fell to 10-11, unable to build momentum from a close win over Creighton in its previous outing.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Seton Hall over Providence, having also defeated the Friars 58-48 on Jan. 8. The Pirates covered the pregame spread as 17.5-point favorites, and the total score of 130 points went under the betting over/under line of 122.5.
Seton Hall will next host Connecticut on Sunday. Providence continues its road trip with a visit to Villanova next Tuesday.
