Appalachian State at Old Dominion
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build momentum in Sun Belt Conference play will meet Wednesday when the Appalachian State Mountaineers visit the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs at the Constant Convocation Center.
Appalachian State (8-7) enters off its most dominant performance of the season, an 82-59 rout of Southern Mississippi on Saturday. The Mountaineers’ offense, which had been held under 55 points in three of their previous four games, exploded behind a career-high 26 points from guard Jayden McBride. The junior added five rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes. Forward Emma Smith also posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Old Dominion (10-7) seeks to rebound from a two-game skid after a 77-60 loss at Georgia Southern on Saturday. The Lady Monarchs have shown a high ceiling, evidenced by an 87-84 double-overtime win over the same Georgia Southern team on New Year’s Day and a 73-68 victory over Georgia State on Jan. 3. Their success often runs through guard Simaru Fields, who is coming off a 29-point, 7-rebound, 6-assist performance in that win over Georgia State. She averaged 20 points over a recent three-game stretch.
The matchup at guard between Appalachian State’s McBride and Old Dominion’s Fields will be pivotal. McBride has shown explosive scoring ability, while Fields provides a multifaceted threat as a scorer and playmaker.
Historically, Old Dominion holds a 3-1 series advantage, though the teams have not met since 1993. This contest renews the regional rivalry as both programs navigate the Sun Belt schedule.
Following this game, Appalachian State travels to face Georgia State on Saturday. Old Dominion remains at home to host Marshall on Saturday.
