Longwood Women Overpower Winthrop in High-Scoring Big South Affair
FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Longwood Lancers showcased their explosive offensive potential Wednesday night, turning a tight first half into a commanding Big South Conference victory with a dominant second-half performance, defeating the Winthrop Eagles 100-79 at a raucous Willet Hall.
In a game that lived up to its billing as a clash between two of the conference’s hotter teams, Longwood used a decisive 28-15 third-quarter surge to break open a five-point halftime lead and never looked back. The victory improved the Lancers to 13-4 overall and solidified their strong start to league play, while Winthrop fell to 10-9.
The most critical juncture arrived early in the third period. Leading 45-40 at the break, Longwood came out of the locker room with heightened defensive intensity. The Lancers forced a series of hurried Winthrop possessions, converting turnovers into easy transition opportunities. A key sequence saw Amor Harris steal the ball and find Malea Brown for a layup, part of a 9-2 run that extended the lead to 54-42. Winthrop, which had shot effectively in the first half, went cold, managing only 15 points in the quarter on 6-of-17 shooting while committing seven turnovers against Longwood’s swarming defense.
Longwood’s offensive balance and efficiency were overwhelming. The Lancers shot a blistering 53.6% from the field and an even more impressive 50% from three-point range, connecting on 15 of 30 attempts. They complemented their outside shooting with a strong inside game, outscoring Winthrop 42-38 in the paint and converting 11 of 15 free throws.
The star of the night was Longwood guard Malea Brown. The Putnam Hall, Florida, native poured in a game-high 21 points, dished out five assists, and recorded three steals in 33 minutes. Her playmaking, particularly in the second half, was instrumental in dissecting the Winthrop defense. She was one of five Lancers to score in double figures, joined by Frances Ulysse (14 points, 3 blocks), JaMya Robinson (12 points), Amor Harris (11 points), and Jesstynie Scott (10 points, 4 assists). Jasmine Peaks orchestrated the offense masterfully, handing out eight assists.
Winthrop was led by the scoring duo of Amourie Porter and Madison Ruff. Porter, from Glen Burnie, Maryland, finished with 21 points, while Ruff, of Sparta, Georgia, added 14 points, three assists, and a block. Cori Lard also chipped in 14 points, and Tocarra Johnson provided 10 points off the bench. The Eagles shot a respectable 47.9% overall but were undone by 25 turnovers, which Longwood converted into 33 points. Winthrop also struggled to contain Longwood’s three-point barrage, making only 6 of 19 from deep themselves.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair characterized by runs. Winthrop started quickly, building an early 10-4 lead behind Ruff and Johnson. Longwood responded with a 9-0 spurt, fueled by threes from Jesstynie Scott and Jasmine Peaks, to take a 21-16 lead late in the first quarter. The Eagles closed the period strong, with Porter hitting a jumper to cut the deficit to 21-20.
The second quarter saw seven lead changes as both teams traded baskets. Winthrop’s Cori Lard hit a pair of three-pointers to keep the Eagles close, and a Ryiah Wilson layup tied the game at 38 with under three minutes left in the half. However, Longwood closed the half on a 7-2 run, capped by a JaMya Robinson three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining, to take a 45-40 advantage into intermission.
That momentum carried into the third quarter, where Longwood’s game-breaking run occurred. After extending the lead, the Lancers continued to apply pressure in the fourth, scoring 27 points to put the game fully out of reach, eventually reaching the century mark on a Kayla Washington three-pointer in the final minute.
The announced attendance was 1,267 at Willet Hall. Longwood will look to continue its winning ways at home against High Point on Saturday. Winthrop returns home to face Radford, also on Saturday.
