Youngstown State at Wright State

FAIRBORN, Ohio (Interstat) — A surging Youngstown State women’s basketball team looks to continue its Horizon League ascent when it visits a struggling Wright State squad on Wednesday night at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.

The Penguins (12-5, 3-1 Horizon) enter with momentum after a 58-54 home win over Fort Wayne on Saturday. They have won seven of their last nine games and sit near the top of the conference standings. The Raiders (6-12, 1-3), meanwhile, seek to halt a three-game skid following a 70-59 loss at IU Indy.

Youngstown State dominated the first meeting this season, a 65-46 victory at home on Dec. 16. Penguins guard Danielle Cameron scored 18 points in that contest and has been a consistent force. She is coming off a 15-point, 4-assist performance against Fort Wayne and has averaged 12.1 points over her last eight games.

Wright State will counter with guard Abbie Riddle, who led the team with 13 points and 5 rebounds in the loss to IU Indy. She scored 15 points in a loss to Green Bay on Dec. 30 but was held to 7 points in the first matchup with Youngstown State.

The Penguins’ success has been built on defense, holding opponents to an average of 56.2 points during their recent 7-2 stretch. Offensively, they feature balanced scoring behind Cameron, with Casey Santoro (18 points vs. Fort Wayne) and Sophia Gregory (15 points vs. Fort Wayne) providing key support.

Wright State has struggled to find consistency, particularly on the defensive end, allowing 78.3 points per game during its current losing streak. The Raiders will need a stronger offensive showing after shooting just 36.2% from the field in the December loss to the Penguins.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST. Youngstown State visits Robert Morris next on Jan. 21, while Wright State hosts Northern Kentucky on Jan. 17.
