Butler Defeats Providence in Big East Women’s Basketball Matchup
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — A frigid offensive start proved too deep a hole for Providence to escape as Butler capitalized on early momentum to secure a 62-52 victory in a Big East women’s basketball game Wednesday night at a sparsely attended Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Bulldogs, improving to 8-10 overall, seized control with a dominant first half, building a 40-23 lead by intermission. Providence, which fell to 9-10, managed just nine points in the opening quarter and shot a dismal 20 for 59 from the field for the game. Butler’s efficient offense, which hit 25 of 47 shots and 8 of 16 from three-point range, contrasted sharply with the Friars’ struggles.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the first quarter, where Butler established a tone of defensive pressure and offensive execution from which Providence never fully recovered. After Providence’s Nalani Kaysia scored the game’s first basket on a putback, the Bulldogs unleashed a decisive 16-2 run over the next six minutes. The surge was fueled by active hands and precise ball movement. Butler forced five Providence turnovers during the stretch, with Lily Zeinstra and Addison Baxter each recording steals. The Bulldogs’ offense ran smoothly, with Baxter assisting on a Mallory Miller three-pointer and later hitting one of her own, while Saniya Jackson also connected from deep. Anna Wypych capped the quarter with two free throws, giving Butler an 18-9 lead and momentum it would not relinquish.
Butler extended its advantage in the second quarter, leading by as many as 19 points. The Friars’ offensive woes were encapsulated by a 4-for-23 performance from beyond the arc and an offensive rating of just 79.8 points per 100 possessions. Providence did show fight, using a 9-0 run in the third quarter, keyed by two Sabou Gueye layups and a Princess Moody steal and score, to cut the deficit to 45-38. However, Butler responded immediately, as Miller found Zeinstra for a critical three-pointer to halt the rally and push the lead back to double digits, where it remained for the duration.
Gueye, a guard from Dakar, Senegal, was a bright spot for Providence, scoring a game-high 22 points on 10-for-19 shooting in 37 minutes, adding three steals. Teneisia Brown of Montego Bay, Jamaica, contributed 10 points and four assists for the Friars.
Butler’s victory was a balanced effort. Jackson, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, led the Bulldogs with 13 points. Wypych, of Rockford, Michigan, also scored 13 off the bench, all in the first half, including two three-pointers. Miller, from Aberdeen, South Dakota, posted 10 points, three assists and a block, while Baxter from Larwill, Indiana, directed the offense with eight points and five assists. Zeinstra, from Byron Center, Michigan, chipped in six points and four assists.
The Bulldogs won despite committing 20 turnovers, as they limited Providence to 33.9% shooting and outrebounded the Friars 32-30. Providence’s 14 offensive rebounds, led by Gueye’s four, were not enough to overcome its inefficient scoring night.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 777, saw both teams continue to navigate challenging conference schedules. Providence next hosts Creighton on Saturday, while Butler travels to face Villanova on Sunday.
