Northwestern Women Pull Away From Rutgers in Big Ten Matchup
EVANSTON, Ill. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter surge propelled the Northwestern Wildcats to a decisive 73-54 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a Big Ten women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,531, was controlled by Northwestern’s offensive cohesion, spearheaded by a historic performance from point guard Caroline Lau. The Wildcats improved to 7-10 overall, while Rutgers fell to 8-9.
Northwestern seized control with a 24-point second quarter, turning a narrow 19-15 deficit after the opening period into a commanding 39-31 halftime lead. The Wildcats shot efficiently throughout the frame, capitalizing on Rutgers’ offensive struggles. The Scarlet Knights managed only 12 points in the quarter, a stretch that ultimately defined the contest.
The Wildcats’ offense flowed through Lau, a sophomore from Westport, Connecticut, who delivered a masterclass in playmaking. She finished with a stat line of 12 points, 8 rebounds, and a staggering 16 assists, orchestrating the attack and consistently finding open teammates. Her 16 assists were a key factor in Northwestern’s 38 points in the paint and their overall offensive rating of 92.5 points per 100 possessions.
Casey Harter of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, was the primary beneficiary of Lau’s distribution, leading all scorers with 21 points. Grace Sullivan from Antioch, Illinois, added 20 points, and Tayla Thomas of East Orange, New Jersey, dominated the glass with 16 rebounds to go with 8 points and 3 blocks.
Rutgers, conversely, was plagued by inefficient offense all afternoon. The Scarlet Knights shot just 29.1% from the field (16 of 55) and 21.1% from three-point range (4 of 19). They also left points at the free-throw line, converting only 18 of 28 attempts. Their offensive rating of 72.7 reflected a afternoon of difficult shots and disrupted rhythm.
Despite the shooting woes, Rutgers showed defensive activity, forcing 18 Northwestern turnovers and converting them into 15 points. The Scarlet Knights also recorded 13 steals, led by the efforts of Faith Blackstone and Lauryn Swann. Swann, from New York City, led Rutgers with 11 points. Blackstone from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, also scored 11, while Nene Ndiaye of Saly, Senegal, and Imani Lester of Raleigh, North Carolina, each contributed 10 points.
The third quarter saw Northwestern extend its lead, outscoring Rutgers 18-10 to take a 57-41 advantage into the final period. The Wildcats’ lead never dipped below 14 points in the fourth quarter as they maintained their offensive execution and defensive pressure to close out the win.
The most important segment of the game was unquestionably Northwestern’s second-quarter run. After a competitive first quarter where Rutgers led by four, the Wildcats flipped the game with a 24-12 period. This surge was fueled by a combination of stifling defense that contested every Rutgers shot and an offensive explosion facilitated by Lau. Her ability to penetrate and dish, or find shooters like Harter in transition, dismantled the Rutgers defense. This quarter established a cushion that Rutgers, with its persistent offensive struggles, could never seriously threaten.
Northwestern’s win snapped a four-game losing streak, while Rutgers has now lost three of its last four conference games.
Rutgers next travels to face Penn State on Jan. 18. Northwestern will host Wisconsin on Jan. 15.
