Drexel at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — A pair of teams looking to establish consistency will meet Friday night when the Drexel Dragons visit the Stony Brook Seawolves in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

The Dragons (7-5) enter having dropped two straight, including a 62-51 home loss to Campbell on Jan. 4. Drexel’s offense has struggled in those defeats, averaging just 55 points after scoring 95 in a win over Division II Chestnut Hill on Dec. 16.

Drexel will lean on guard Amaris Baker, who has been a bright spot during the skid. She scored 22 points in the loss to Campbell and poured in a career-high 33 in a Dec. 20 defeat to Vermont. Baker averages 27.0 points over her last three games.

The Seawolves (6-9) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 73-57 overtime win at William & Mary on Jan. 4. Stony Brook’s defense has been a hallmark, holding opponents under 60 points in six of its nine losses and in all six of its victories.

Forward Diaka Berete keyed the win over William & Mary, erupting for 24 points and five rebounds. Her production has been variable, however, as she was held scoreless in 14 minutes in a Jan. 2 loss at Hampton.

Historically, Drexel has shown more potency on the road, with notable wins at Temple and Marist. Stony Brook is 4-3 at home this season, with all wins coming by at least 13 points.

The game serves as a home-and-home series opener, with the rematch scheduled for Jan. 23 in Philadelphia.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST.
