College of Charleston Edges William & Mary in Tight Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — In a tense Colonial Athletic Association clash defined by defense and dramatic final sequences, the College of Charleston women’s basketball team edged William & Mary 62-60 on Friday night at Kaplan Arena.

The Cougars, who led for only 10 minutes and 33 seconds of game time, used a pivotal third-quarter surge and a series of critical defensive stops in the final minute to secure the road victory. The win improved Charleston to 11-3 overall, while William & Mary fell to 8-6.

The game’s most crucial stretch came in the final 14 seconds with Charleston clinging to a 61-60 lead. William & Mary’s Cassidy Geddes drove for a potential go-ahead layup, but it was emphatically blocked by Charleston’s 6-foot-1 forward Grace Ezebilo. The loose ball was secured by Charleston’s Sophia Tougas, who was immediately fouled.

Tougas made the first free throw to extend the lead to two but missed the second. William & Mary’s Natalie Fox secured the defensive rebound, giving the Tribe a final chance with five seconds remaining. After a timeout, Geddes launched a contested three-pointer from the top of the key that missed, and Fox’s hurried follow-up jumper at the buzzer also failed to connect, sealing the Charleston victory.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair from the start. William & Mary held a narrow 17-16 lead after a first quarter that saw six ties and three lead changes. The Tribe extended their advantage to 28-25 by halftime, largely behind the interior presence of Fox, who finished with a team-high 16 points.

The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. After shooting just 34.5% in the first half, the Cougars found their rhythm, erupting for 22 points in the period. A 9-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Taryn Barbot, gave Charleston a 42-37 lead, its largest of the game to that point. The Cougars took a 47-42 lead into the final quarter, having outscored the Tribe by 11 in the frame.

William & Mary refused to fade, battling back to tie the game at 56-56 on a Monet Dance three-pointer with just under five minutes to play. The teams traded baskets and defensive stands, setting the stage for the frantic finish. Charleston’s final points came on a driving layup by Ezebilo with 2:06 remaining, putting the Cougars up 61-58. Fox answered for William & Mary to cut the lead to one, but neither team would score again until Tougas’ late free throw, as the defenses locked down.

Taryn Barbot led all Charleston scorers with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Taylor Barbot facilitated the offense with a game-high seven assists to go with 12 points. Ezebilo contributed eight points, seven rebounds and two crucial blocks, including the game-saver.

For William & Mary, Fox’s 16 points led the way, while Alexa Mikeska added 10 points and five assists. Dance finished with 12 points and Geddes had seven points, five assists and two blocks.

The game was characterized by defensive pressure, with the teams combining for 27 turnovers. Charleston’s ability to capitalize on those miscues, scoring 15 points off turnovers compared to William & Mary’s nine, proved a key differential. The Cougars also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Tribe 42-35.

A crowd of 1,008 at Kaplan Arena watched the tightly contested conference matchup, which lived up to its pregame billing as a clash of two of the CAA’s top early-season teams.

College of Charleston will look to continue its momentum on the road at Hampton on Sunday. William & Mary will also hit the road for its next contest, facing Campbell on Sunday.
