Coastal Carolina Dominates Early, Cruises Past Appalachian State
BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — A dominant first-quarter performance set the tone Wednesday night as the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team snapped a two-game skid with a decisive 69-53 victory over Appalachian State at the Holmes Center.
The Chanticleers, who improved to 8-9 overall and evened their Sun Belt Conference record, raced out to a 23-5 lead after the opening period. The Mountaineers, who fell to 7-7, managed just two field goals in the first quarter, missing 13 of their first 15 shots and committing six turnovers against a stifling Coastal Carolina defense.
That early cushion proved insurmountable. While Appalachian State found more offensive rhythm in the subsequent quarters, outscoring Coastal Carolina 48-46 over the final three periods, the Chanticleers never allowed the lead to dip below 13 points in the second half. The Mountaineers could not overcome their frigid start, finishing the game shooting just 30 percent from the floor.
Coastal Carolina’s offense was powered by a balanced attack and efficient play inside. The Chanticleers scored 30 points in the paint and capitalized on Appalachian State’s mistakes, converting 16 points off turnovers.
Guard Kristin Williams, a sophomore from San Diego, led all scorers with 17 points, adding four assists in 37 minutes. She was instrumental in the early surge, scoring nine points in the first quarter. Forward Kinsea Grimes, a freshman from Mansfield, Texas, provided a significant boost off the bench with 13 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line. Center Tracey Hueston, a sophomore from Roanoke, Virginia, also contributed 13 points and two blocks, anchoring the interior defense.
Appalachian State was led by forward Daisia Mitchell, a junior from Riverside, California, who scored 15 points. Guard Elena Pericic, a sophomore from Rijeka, Croatia, filled the stat sheet with 13 points, four assists and a block, but the Mountaineers struggled to find consistent scoring beyond that duo.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the opening minutes. After Appalachian State’s Jayden McBride scored the game’s first basket, Coastal Carolina unleashed a 21-0 run over the next nine minutes. The Chanticleers’ defense was relentless, forcing five turnovers and holding the Mountaineers to 0-for-11 shooting during the stretch. Offensively, Coastal Carolina attacked the basket with purpose, with Williams, Grimes and Paige Bradley combining for 17 points during the run. A three-pointer by Williams with 51 seconds left in the quarter capped the surge, giving Coastal Carolina a 23-2 lead and effectively deciding the contest before many in the announced crowd of 302 had settled into their seats.
Appalachian State showed fight in the second quarter, outscoring Coastal Carolina 16-18 behind eight points from Mitchell, but the Chanticleers still carried a 41-21 advantage into halftime. Any hope of a dramatic Mountaineer comeback was extinguished early in the third quarter as Coastal Carolina quickly pushed the lead back to 24 points.
The victory provides a positive start to a crucial stretch for Coastal Carolina, which had lost five of its last six games entering Wednesday. Appalachian State, which was projected as a solid favorite by advanced metrics, saw a two-game win streak halted and will look to regroup in conference play.
Coastal Carolina travels to face Marshall on Saturday. Appalachian State will remain at home to host Southern Mississippi, also on Saturday.
