Lobos Overcome Early Deficit, Stun Rams With Second-Quarter Surge

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal fueled by a historic defensive stand, the New Mexico Lobos erased a 15-point first-quarter deficit to upset the Colorado State Rams 66-59 in a Mountain West women’s basketball clash Wednesday night at Moby Arena.

The game turned on a nightmarish second quarter for the home team. After racing to a 22-13 lead behind an efficient opening period, the Rams’ offense completely evaporated. Colorado State managed just two points in the entire second quarter, a layup by Brooke Carlson with 46 seconds remaining before halftime. The Rams endured a scoring drought of over nine minutes, missing 13 consecutive field goal attempts and committing six turnovers against a reinvigorated New Mexico defense.

That defensive lockdown allowed the Lobos to completely flip the script. New Mexico closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run, then unleashed a 19-2 blitz in the second. A pivotal 13-0 run, featuring three-pointers from Destinee Hooks and Alyssa Hargrove and a steal-and-score sequence capped by a Laila Abdurraqib three, gave New Mexico its first lead at 28-24. The Lobos took a 32-24 advantage into halftime, outscoring the Rams 32-2 over a span of 13 minutes and 14 seconds of game time.

Colorado State, which entered the game with a 13-2 record and an 80.1% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, regrouped after the break. The Rams chipped away, using a 13-4 run to open the third quarter and briefly reclaim a 37-36 lead. The teams traded blows in a physical second half, with the Rams dominating inside, finishing with a 34-18 advantage in paint points. Kloe Froebe and Carlson kept Colorado State within striking distance, but the Lobos had an answer each time.

That answer was overwhelmingly Laila Abdurraqib. The guard from Fishers, Indiana, delivered a career-high 25 points, including six critical three-pointers. Her shooting proved indispensable for a New Mexico team that struggled from two-point range, shooting just 23 of 61 overall. Abdurraqib’s final triple, with 1:07 remaining, pushed the lead to 60-55. After a Froebe layup cut it to three, Abdurraqib iced the game at the free-throw line, making all four of her attempts in the final 21 seconds under intense pressure.

While Abdurraqib provided the offensive firepower, a collective defensive effort secured the win. New Mexico forced 12 Rams turnovers, converting them into 18 points, while Colorado State managed only six points off Lobos miscues. New Mexico also connected on 11 three-pointers at a 42.3% clip, compared to just 5 of 21 for the Rams. Cacia Antonio added 11 points for the Lobos, while Joana Magalhães chipped in nine.

Colorado State was led by Froebe’s 21 points and three blocks. Carlson finished with 17 points and five assists, and Lexus Bargesser added 10 points, four assists, and two blocks in the losing effort.

The victory, witnessed by 1,208 fans, improved New Mexico to 12-4 overall and marked a significant road win in conference play. The loss dropped Colorado State to 13-3. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Albuquerque on Feb. 14.

The most important part of the game was undoubtedly the second quarter, where New Mexico’s 19-2 scoring edge transformed a nine-point deficit into a commanding eight-point halftime lead. This period of defensive dominance, holding a potent Colorado State offense to a single field goal, provided the cushion and momentum the Lobos needed to withstand the Rams’ second-half rallies and secure the upset.
