LSU at Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A clash of Southeastern Conference titans and unbeatens will highlight the women’s college basketball slate Sunday when the Vanderbilt Commodores host the LSU Tigers at Memorial Gymnasium.
Vanderbilt (14-0, 1-0 SEC) enters as one of the nation’s last remaining undefeated teams, while LSU (13-1, 0-1) looks to rebound from its first loss of the season. The matchup features two of the sport’s most dynamic guards in a pivotal early conference showdown.
The Commodores are powered by junior Mikayla Blakes, who is coming off a career-defining performance. In Vanderbilt’s 88-71 road win at Arkansas on Thursday, Blakes poured in 35 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished eight assists. She has scored 17 or more points in five straight games, spearheading a Vanderbilt offense that has won every game by at least 19 points this season.
LSU’s path, however, hit a speed bump on New Year’s Day. The Tigers fell 80-78 at home to Kentucky, snapping a 13-game win streak to open the season. Star guard Mikaylah Williams did all she could in the loss, scoring 26 points with five assists in 37 minutes. Williams has been a consistent force, averaging 15.1 points per game, but will need support against a deep Vanderbilt squad.
The Tigers’ non-conference schedule was dominant, featuring wins over then-Duke and a 112-35 rout of Washington State. Vanderbilt’s resume includes double-digit victories over Power Five opponents Virginia, BYU and Oregon State.
Defense will be a key factor. Vanderbilt has held 10 opponents under 50 points this season. LSU’s high-octane offense, which averages 99.1 points per game, will present the Commodores’ stiffest test to date. Conversely, LSU must contain Blakes and forward Sacha Washington, who posted a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double against Arkansas.
The game marks the start of a brutal stretch for both teams. Vanderbilt next faces Missouri and a road trip to Texas A&M, while LSU travels to Georgia before a marquee non-conference rematch with Texas.
Sunday’s contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EST tipoff. The winner will seize early control in the SEC race and solidify its case for the top ranking.
