Auburn Women Pull Away From Jackson State in Nonconference Finale

AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — The Auburn women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance to overcome a sluggish offensive afternoon, pulling away from Jackson State for a 64-48 victory on Monday at Auburn Arena.

In a game defined by turnovers and missed opportunities for the visiting Lady Tigers, Auburn’s defense set the tone early and never relented. Jackson State committed 21 turnovers, which Auburn converted into 16 points, while the home team also racked up 10 steals and seven blocks. The defensive pressure suffocated Jackson State’s offense, particularly after halftime, holding them to just four points in the third quarter.

Auburn guard Mya Petticord led all scorers with 21 points, including three 3-pointers, and was instrumental in building the early lead. Ja’Mia Harris added 12 points and three assists, while Sania Richardson provided a crucial spark off the bench with 12 points, including two key three-pointers. For Jackson State, Leianya Massenat battled for a team-high 15 points, and Rhema Pegues added 10, but the team struggled to find consistent offense against Auburn’s length and activity.

The most important stretch of the game came in the third quarter, where Auburn’s defense completely dismantled Jackson State’s rhythm. After trailing 33-40 at halftime, Jackson State managed only a single field goal in the entire third period—a layup from Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua at the 8:25 mark. From there, the Lady Tigers endured a scoring drought of over seven minutes, missing nine consecutive shots and turning the ball over five times. During this crippling dry spell, Auburn methodically built its lead from 42-40 to 49-42 by the quarter’s end, a margin from which Jackson State could not recover. That defensive lockdown quarter, turning a competitive game into a comfortable lead, was the decisive turning point.

Auburn established control from the opening tip, racing to a 22-12 lead after the first quarter behind 10 points from Petticord. Jackson State showed resilience in the second quarter, outscoring Auburn 21-18 behind 10 points from Massenat to cut the deficit to seven at the break. However, the offensive collapse in the third quarter, where they shot just 1-of-12 from the field, sealed their fate. Auburn’s offense, while not efficient overall, did enough, shooting 44.9% from the field and 44.4% from three-point range.

The statistical disparity told the story of Auburn’s comprehensive win. Beyond the turnover margin, Auburn dished out 10 assists to Jackson State’s four and out-rebounded the visitors 34-30. Jackson State finished the game shooting 32.1% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc.

With the win, Auburn improves to 11-3 on the season as it prepares to open Southeastern Conference play. Jackson State falls to 2-10 and will look to regroup in Southwestern Athletic Conference action next week.

The game was played before a crowd of 3,177 at Auburn Arena.
