Lady Colonels Dominate Second Quarter, Cruise Past Visiting Pirates
RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — The Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels used a dominant third quarter and a stifling defensive effort to pull away from the Hampton Pirates for a 70-52 victory in non-conference women’s basketball action Monday afternoon at McBrayer Arena.
In a game defined by offensive struggles, Eastern Kentucky’s ability to capitalize on Hampton’s mistakes proved decisive. The Lady Colonels turned 11 Hampton turnovers into 20 points, while the Pirates managed only seven points off an equal number of Eastern Kentucky miscues. That disparity in points off turnovers, coupled with a decisive 22-12 scoring edge in the third period, allowed Eastern Kentucky to transform a competitive contest into a comfortable win.
The game began with Hampton’s Kiarra Mcelrath connecting on a 3-pointer just 36 seconds in, but it was a harbinger of little success to come for the Pirates from long range. Hampton would finish the afternoon shooting a frigid 2 for 20 from beyond the arc. Eastern Kentucky was not much more efficient, hitting 8 of 28, but found its offensive rhythm inside when it mattered most.
The first half was a grind for both teams. Eastern Kentucky held an 18-17 lead after a back-and-forth first quarter and extended it to 37-24 by halftime, closing the second quarter on a 10-2 run. The Lady Colonels’ defense held Hampton to just seven points in the second quarter on 3-of-19 shooting.
The most important stretch of the game came immediately after halftime. Eastern Kentucky opened the third quarter with an 8-2 spurt, pushing its lead to 19 points and effectively putting the game out of reach. Hampton never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way as the Lady Colonels methodically controlled the pace and the glass.
Eastern Kentucky’s Liz Freihofer, a 5-foot-10 guard from Union, Kentucky, anchored the effort with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in 35 minutes. Her work on the defensive end, which included two steals, was instrumental in disrupting Hampton’s offensive flow. Joseana Vaz, a 6-foot forward from Praia, Cape Verde, also neared a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
For Hampton, the lone bright spot was the scoring of Kiarra Mcelrath. The 5-foot-7 guard from Columbus, Ohio, logged a game-high 39 minutes and finished with 20 points, though she needed 19 shots to get there. Le’Asia Foreman of Norfolk, Virginia, contributed six points and nine rebounds.
The statistical story was one of poor shooting and wasted opportunities. Hampton finished the game shooting 29.2% from the field. Eastern Kentucky was only marginally better at 37.5%, but supplemented its offense with a 16-9 advantage in offensive rebounds and a significant edge in assists, 14-4, demonstrating more cohesive ball movement.
The win improves Eastern Kentucky’s record to 9-4 as the Lady Colonels head into the new year. Hampton falls to an even 6-6 and will look to regroup from an offensive performance that saw them post an offensive rating of just 70.2 points per 100 possessions. An announced crowd of 249 at McBrayer Arena watched as Eastern Kentucky’s defense consistently generated the stops and turnovers that led to its decisive victory.
