Penn State Lady Lions Dominate Yale Bulldogs in Non-Conference Matchup
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — In a display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Penn State Lady Lions secured a commanding 82-64 victory over the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center.
The Lady Lions, who improved their season record to 6-1, controlled the game from the opening tip, using a potent inside attack and a disruptive defense to build a lead that the struggling Bulldogs, now 1-7, could not overcome.
Penn State’s offensive execution was the story of the game, as they scored nearly 97 points per 100 possessions, a stark contrast to Yale’s offensive rating of just over 80. The Lady Lions shot 53.7 percent from the field, capitalizing on their size advantage to outscore Yale 52 to 36 in the paint.
The backcourt duo of Kiyomi McMiller and Moriah Murray, alongside the dominant interior presence of Gracie Merkle, proved too much for Yale to handle. McMiller, a guard from Silver Spring, Maryland, led all scorers with 19 points and dished out a game-high six assists. Murray, from Dunmore, Pennsylvania, also tallied 18 points, while Merkle, a 6-foot-6 center from Mount Washington, Kentucky, added 18 points and eight rebounds in just 22 minutes of action.
Yale was led by forward Luisa Vydrova of Prague, Czech Republic, who scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds. Guard Marisa Chapman from Middletown, New York, contributed 12 points and four assists for the Bulldogs.
Despite forcing 23 Penn State turnovers and converting them into 29 points, Yale’s own offensive struggles were amplified by 21 turnovers of their own. The Bulldogs shot 45.3 percent from the floor but attempted only eight three-pointers, making three, and got to the free-throw line just five times.
Penn State’s defense was equally impactful, recording 15 steals and blocking five shots. The Lady Lions also shared the ball effectively, finishing with 15 assists on 36 made field goals.
The game began with Penn State establishing its interior game early, with Merkle scoring the first two baskets of the contest. While Yale managed to keep the game close for much of the first quarter, a late layup from Rachael Okokoh of Montreal, Canada, gave the Lady Lions a 19-15 lead at the end of the period.
Penn State began to pull away in the second quarter, using a 9-2 run to extend its lead. The Lady Lions maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the second half, with their lead never dipping below 12 points in the fourth quarter as they closed out the win.
Yale’s Dorka Kastl, from Budapest, Hungary, did not score in high volume with just five points but filled the stat sheet with eight assists, four steals and four blocks.
Penn State will look to continue its strong start to the season when it hosts Nebraska on Saturday. Yale, still searching for consistency, returns home to face Bryant on Wednesday.
