Drexel Remains Unbeaten, Tops Loyola Maryland in Women’s Basketball

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The Drexel Dragons remained undefeated on the young season, methodically pulling away from a feisty Loyola Maryland squad for a 66-57 victory in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Amaris Baker, a hometown guard from Philadelphia, led all scorers with 20 points to pace a balanced Drexel attack. The Dragons improved to 4-0, while the Greyhounds’ search for their first win continued, dropping them to 0-5.

Loyola Maryland came out with impressive energy in the first quarter, building an early lead behind the interior presence of Lex Therien. The Greyhounds connected on multiple 3-pointers and led 20-15 after the opening period.

The game’s momentum, however, began to shift decisively in the second quarter. Drexel’s defense clamped down, holding Loyola Maryland to just nine points in the period. The Dragons, meanwhile, maintained their offensive consistency, also scoring 15 points to take a 30-29 lead into halftime.

Drexel continued to build on its advantage after the break. A key 3-pointer from Laine McGurk late in the third quarter gave the Dragons their largest lead to that point at 47-40. Loyola Maryland’s Therien answered with a layup just before the buzzer to keep the Greyhounds within five points heading to the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Drexel’s offensive execution and defensive pressure proved too much for the Greyhounds to overcome. The Dragons steadily increased their lead, reaching a nine-point advantage that they maintained through the final minutes to secure the win.

Therien, a 6-foot-1 forward from Marlton, New Jersey, was a force for Loyola Maryland, finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double. She also added four assists and a block. Amandine Amorich, from Montpellier, France, provided a significant scoring boost with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and contributed two blocks.

For Drexel, Baker’s 20-point performance was complemented by 18 points from McGurk, a West Chester, Pennsylvania, native. Deja Evans of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, provided a strong inside presence with 13 points. The Dragons’ floor general, Grace O’Neill, also from West Chester, directed the offense masterfully, dishing out eight assists to go with six points and six rebounds in a game-high 40 minutes of action.

While Loyola Maryland dominated points in the paint, 34-24, Drexel’s ability to capitalize on opportunities and maintain scoring across all four quarters was the difference. Both teams were nearly even in points off turnovers.

The game was attended by 553 fans at Drexel’s home court. The Dragons will look to continue their winning streak on the road against Lehigh on Wednesday. Loyola Maryland returns home to host Mount Saint Mary’s on Thursday, still seeking its first victory of the 2025-26 campaign.
