Lady Colonels Hold Off Fighting Hawks for Home Victory

RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by turnovers and frigid shooting, the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels grinded out a 57-46 victory over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at McBrayer Arena.

A crowd of 281 watched as Eastern Kentucky improved to 3-1 on the young season, while North Dakota’s search for its first win continued, dropping to 0-4.

The game was ultimately decided by a disastrous first quarter for the visiting Fighting Hawks and an inability to protect the basketball throughout the contest. North Dakota committed 27 turnovers, which the Lady Colonels converted into 19 points. Eastern Kentucky, while not flawless with 14 turnovers of its own, maintained enough composure to keep North Dakota at arm’s length for the final three periods.

Eastern Kentucky burst out of the gate, opening a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Colonels’ early offense was fueled by a balanced attack and capitalized on several North Dakota miscues. The Fighting Hawks showed a flicker of life in the second quarter, holding Eastern Kentucky to just eight points and narrowing the gap to 28-21 at halftime.

Any momentum North Dakota carried into the break was quickly extinguished as Eastern Kentucky rebuilt its lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Fighting Hawks 16-13 to take a 44-34 advantage into the final frame. North Dakota could never mount a sustained run in the fourth quarter, with the Lady Colonels doing just enough offensively to secure the 11-point win.

The offensive numbers were bleak for both teams, but particularly for North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks shot a mere 26.9 percent from the floor, connecting on just 14 of 52 attempts. They were only slightly better from beyond the arc, making 5 of 27 three-point attempts for 18.5 percent. Their lone bright spot was at the free-throw line, where they went 13 for 16.

Eastern Kentucky did not fare much better in terms of efficiency, shooting 29.9 percent on 23-of-77 shooting. The Lady Colonels hoisted 39 three-pointers, making nine for a 23.1 percent clip. They attempted only four free throws, making two.

The disparity in offensive execution was highlighted by the teams’ offensive ratings. North Dakota managed just 46 points from 81 possessions for a rating of 57.1, while Eastern Kentucky scored 57 points from 82 possessions for a rating of 69.6.

Eastern Kentucky’s Liz Freihofer, a 5-foot-10 guard from Union, Kentucky, led all players with a well-rounded stat line of 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes of action. The Lady Colonels received a significant scoring boost from Kailani Lindsey, a 6-1 forward from Wildwood, Florida, who poured in a game-high 18 points in just 18 minutes off the bench. Ella Bradley, a 6-1 forward from Cambridge, New Zealand, added 10 points and five rebounds.

For North Dakota, the interior presence of center Walker Demers was a silver lining. The 6-1 sophomore from Grafton, North Dakota, battled for 13 rebounds and recorded three blocks to go with seven points. Forward Ava Miller, a 6-2 freshman from Rochester, Minnesota, posted a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Guard Mikayla Aumer came off the bench to contribute eight points.

Eastern Kentucky dominated the paint, outscoring North Dakota 26-16, and also won the battle on the offensive glass, grabbing 11 rebounds to North Dakota’s six.

The Fighting Hawks will look for immediate redemption and their first win of the season when they host these same Lady Colonels on Tuesday. Eastern Kentucky will then return home to face Midway next Saturday.
