Auburn Holds Off UNC Greensboro for Home Win

AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by runs and missed opportunities, the Auburn Tigers remained undefeated by holding off a persistent UNC Greensboro squad for a 64-57 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday night at a raucous Auburn Arena.

The Tigers improved to 3-0 on the young season, while the Spartans, despite a valiant effort, fell to 0-3.

Auburn seized control of the game from the opening tip, embarking on a 14-0 run in the first quarter that put UNC Greensboro in an early hole. The Tigers’ defense was stifling, forcing the Spartans into a series of early turnovers and difficult shots. Mya Petticord, the dynamic guard from Detroit, ignited the run with a pair of three-pointers, showcasing the offensive firepower that would challenge the Spartans all evening. By the end of the first quarter, Auburn had built a commanding 19-8 lead.

However, the Spartans refused to capitulate. They slowly chipped away at the deficit throughout the second quarter, finding their rhythm from beyond the arc. Makiah Asidanya, the standout guard from Pittsburg, California, began to heat up, connecting on several three-pointers to keep her team within striking distance. Despite UNC Greensboro’s improved offensive output, Auburn managed to maintain its advantage, taking a 34-23 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter saw Auburn re-establish its dominance, pushing the lead back to 16 points at one stage. The Tigers’ inside presence, led by Khady Leye of Senegal and Ja’Mia Harris of Lancaster, Texas, created problems for the Spartans in the paint. Leye was particularly effective, converting several key baskets and free throws. Just as it seemed Auburn might pull away for good, UNC Greensboro mounted another response. A 7-0 spurt, capped by a Tasia Johnson three-pointer, cut the lead to single digits and injected new life into the Spartan bench.

The fourth quarter became a tense, back-and-forth affair. UNC Greensboro continued its relentless pursuit, closing the gap to just two points with under five minutes to play. Asidanya was the catalyst, scoring from deep and drawing fouls to get to the free-throw line. Her performance kept the pressure squarely on the home team.

But every time the Spartans threatened, Auburn had an answer. With the outcome hanging in the balance, it was the Tigers’ depth and composure that proved decisive. Harissoum Coulibaly of Paris, France, delivered crucial baskets down the stretch, including a pivotal jump shot and two free throws that extended the lead. Then, with just over a minute remaining and the shot clock winding down, Mya Petticord drained a dagger three-pointer off an assist from Coulibaly, pushing the Auburn lead to seven and effectively sealing the victory.

Statistically, the game was a study in contrasts that ultimately favored the Tigers. While both teams shot an identical 21-of-46 from the floor and 10-of-23 from three-point range, Auburn was more efficient with its possessions, posting an offensive rating of 105.7 compared to UNC Greensboro’s 97.4. The Tigers also capitalized more effectively on turnovers, scoring 20 points off Spartan mistakes, and held a slight edge in points in the paint, 14-8.

Makiah Asidanya was the undeniable star for UNC Greensboro, pouring in a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds in 33 minutes. Her backcourt mate, Rylan Moffitt of Bushnell, Florida, provided a strong double-double with 13 points and seven rebounds. For Auburn, the scoring was more balanced. Mya Petticord led the way with 18 points, while Ja’Mia Harris and Khady Leye each added 11. Harris also contributed seven rebounds and two assists, while Leye pulled down five boards. A’riel Jackson of Brooklyn, New York, facilitated the offense with a team-high four assists.

The announced attendance of 2,832 witnessed a gritty performance from both squads. For Auburn, the win continues a positive start to the season following decisive victories over Alabama State and Charlotte. UNC Greensboro, meanwhile, continues to search for its first win after opening the season with challenging road contests at Stanford and San Francisco. The Spartans will look to break into the win column in their next outing at Presbyterian on Friday. Auburn returns to action at home against Mississippi Valley State on Thursday.
