MISSOULA, Mont. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant start and a furious, desperate finish, the Northern Colorado Bears escaped Dahlberg Arena with a narrow 61-59 victory over the Montana Lady Griz in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball clash Monday night.

The Bears, improving to 22-9 overall, built a commanding 36-25 halftime lead by dictating the pace and capitalizing on Montana’s offensive struggles in the second quarter, where the Lady Griz managed only eight points. Northern Colorado’s lead ballooned to 15 points early in the third quarter, seemingly putting the game out of reach for a Montana team that fell to 8-21.

But the final period transformed into a dramatic comeback attempt. Sparked by the backcourt duo of Jocelyn Land and Aby Shubert, who each finished with 19 points, the Lady Griz unleashed a 23-point fourth quarter. They switched to a pressing defense that forced Northern Colorado into rushed shots and turnovers, chipping away at the deficit with a series of clutch plays.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute. Trailing 57-55, Montana’s Avery Waddington completed an alley-oop pass from Draya Wacker with 32 seconds remaining to tie the game, sending the crowd of 1,964 into a frenzy. On the ensuing inbound play, Montana’s pressure forced a turnover, and Mack Konig was fouled with 6 seconds left. Konig, who finished with six points, calmly sank both free throws to give Montana its first lead since the opening minutes, 59-57.

Northern Colorado, however, had a final response. Inbounding under their own basket with 6 seconds on the clock, the Bears found Neenah George, who was fouled by Konig on a catch-and-shoot attempt. With the arena at a crescendo, George stepped to the line and drained both free throws to retie the game at 59.

Montana’s ensuing attempt to win the game in regulation failed. After a timeout, a designed play resulted in a contested driving layup attempt by Land that missed. Waddington secured the offensive rebound but her put-back attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game to overtime deadlocked.

In the extra period, both teams were gripped by offensive tension, combining for only two points. The Bears’ Gabi Fields, who contributed 10 points, broke the tie with a driving layup midway through the period. Montana had multiple opportunities to answer but was plagued by empty possessions, including a blocked three-point attempt by Aby Shubert in the final minute. Northern Colorado secured the defensive rebound and ran out the clock to seal the two-point victory.

The game was a tale of two halves and contrasting strengths. Northern Colorado’s early success was built on balanced scoring and defensive discipline, holding Montana to just 25 points through the first 20 minutes. The Bears’ ability to withstand Montana’s frantic fourth-quarter rally, which saw the Lady Griz shoot 50% from the field and force seven turnovers, proved decisive.

For Montana, the loss encapsulated a difficult season. The Lady Griz showcased resilience in the comeback, led by Land’s 35 minutes and all-around effort and Shubert’s scoring punch, but ultimately fell short due to the deep early deficit. Waddington added eight points, five assists and two blocks for the home team.

The victory allows Northern Colorado to finish the regular season above .500 in conference play and builds momentum heading into the postseason. For Montana, the narrow defeat adds another heartbreaking chapter to a year of near misses.
