Stony Brook Edges Elon in Tight Women’s Basketball Contest

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a tense, back-and-forth affair defined by critical plays in the final minute, the Stony Brook Seawolves edged the Elon Phoenix 62-58 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

The Seawolves, who trailed by as many as seven points in the third quarter, closed the game on a decisive 10-4 run over the final three minutes to improve to 17-12 overall. Elon, which had won three of its last four, fell to an even 14-14.

The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded with Stony Brook clinging to a 59-57 lead and 41 seconds remaining. Elon’s Ashlee Shaw was called for a foul on Stony Brook’s Sandra Frau-Garcia, sending the Seawolves’ point guard to the line. Frau-Garcia, who orchestrated the Stony Brook offense all afternoon, calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to four.

On the ensuing possession, Elon worked the ball inside to LaNae’ Corbett, who found Tyana Walker for a layup to cut the deficit back to two with just eight seconds left. The Phoenix immediately fouled Frau-Garcia again, and she delivered once more, making the first of two free throws to put Stony Brook up 62-58. After a missed second attempt, Elon’s last-gasp three-point attempt was off the mark as time expired.

The contest was a defensive struggle throughout, with both teams enduring scoring droughts. Elon built its largest lead at 39-32 midway through the third quarter behind the interior scoring of Corbett. The junior from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was a force for the Phoenix, scoring a game-high 19 points on efficient 8-of-12 shooting from the field, adding a steal and a block in just 18 minutes of action.

Stony Brook responded with a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead, fueled by the backcourt duo of Frau-Garcia and Diaka Berete. Frau-Garcia, a sophomore from Pego, Spain, controlled the tempo and nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and nine assists while logging 38 minutes. Berete, a sharpshooter from Toronto, provided crucial perimeter scoring with a team-high 17 points, including three three-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped stave off Elon rallies.

Elon’s Quinzia Fulmore, a 6-foot-3 forward from Greensboro, North Carolina, added 11 points, but the Phoenix were hampered by 18 turnovers and an offense that managed only 12 points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Stony Brook’s defensive effort was anchored by Caitlin Frost, who played 36 minutes, contributed eight points, and had three steals and a key block in the final minutes. Janay Brantley also reached double figures for the Seawolves with 12 points.

The first half set the tone for a tight battle. Elon led 17-16 after a first quarter that saw six lead changes. The Phoenix maintained a narrow 27-29 advantage at halftime despite shooting just 36% from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Stony Brook stayed close by capitalizing on Elon miscues, scoring nine points off turnovers before the break.

With the victory, Stony Brook surpassed its win total from the previous season. Elon, which had been seeking its first three-game winning streak in conference play this season, was left to rue missed opportunities down the stretch.

The announced attendance was 717.

Elon next travels to face William & Mary on Thursday. Stony Brook begins a two-game road trip at the College of Charleston, also on Thursday.
