Miami (Ohio) Women Pull Away From Akron, Sweep Season Series

OXFORD, Ohio (Interstat) — The Miami (Ohio) Redhawks methodically dispatched the visiting Akron Zips 74-56 in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Millett Hall, leveraging a dominant second quarter and a disruptive defense to secure a victory that underscored the stark contrast between the two teams this season.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 792, was never truly in doubt after the opening period. The Redhawks, who improved to 24-5 overall and solidified their position atop the conference, used a 21-9 second-quarter surge to turn a narrow 16-12 lead into a commanding 37-21 halftime advantage. That 16-point swing proved to be the decisive stretch, as Akron could never muster a sustained counter-run.

The most important part of the contest was Miami’s overwhelming defensive pressure and its ability to capitalize on Akron’s mistakes. The Redhawks forced 20 Akron turnovers, converting them into numerous transition opportunities, while committing only nine turnovers themselves. Miami’s 10 steals, led by the active hands of guards Tamar Singer and Macie Taylor, constantly disrupted Akron’s offensive flow and fueled their own attack. This defensive intensity was the engine for the second-quarter separation and maintained the cushion throughout the second half.

Offensively, Miami showcased a balanced and efficient attack. Four players scored in double figures, led by Nuria Jurjo of Barcelona, Spain, who tallied 15 points. Macie Taylor of Troy, Ohio, added 13 points off the bench, while Amber Scalia of Stillwater, Minnesota, and Tamar Singer of Haifa, Israel, chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Redhawks shot 52.7% from the field (29 of 55) and assisted on 10 of their 29 made baskets, demonstrating cohesive ball movement.

Akron, which fell to 7-22, was led by guard Liz Murphy of Yackandandah, Spain, who scored a team-high 15 points. Shaena Brew of Rialto, California, contributed 14 points and four assists, and Izzy Callaway added 11 points. The Zips shot a respectable 44% from the field and connected on 10 three-pointers, but their offensive efforts were undermined by the turnover discrepancy and Miami’s superior shot volume. Akron managed only five assists as a team, a testament to Miami’s stifling perimeter defense.

A key factor was the interior presence of Miami’s Ilse de Vries. The 6-foot-3 junior from Groningen, Netherlands, recorded three blocks, altered numerous other shots, and pulled down eight defensive rebounds, effectively anchoring the paint and limiting Akron’s easy scoring chances near the rim.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Miami over Akron, having previously won 79-56 in Akron on Jan. 10. It also continued a pattern for the Zips, who have struggled against the conference’s upper echelon. The Redhawks, projected by advanced metrics to win with a 98.5% probability, played to their season-long identity of defensive discipline and offensive balance.

Akron will look to regroup on Wednesday when it hosts Massachusetts. Miami (Ohio), continuing its pursuit of a MAC regular-season title, returns to action Wednesday at home against Kent State before a pivotal road matchup at Ohio on Saturday to close the regular season.
