McNeese State at Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, La. (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter surge propelled the McNeese State Cowgirls to a 69-59 victory over the Nicholls State Colonels in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Stopher Gym.

The win improved McNeese State’s record to 25-4 overall and solidified its position atop the conference standings. Nicholls State fell to 12-15.

For nearly a half, the game was a tense, back-and-forth affair. The Colonels, led by a sharp-shooting first quarter from guard Sh’Diamond McKnight, built an early lead and maintained a 34-22 advantage at halftime. McNeese State struggled offensively in the first half, managing just 22 points on inefficient shooting while committing nine turnovers.

The entire complexion of the contest shifted irrevocably after halftime. The Cowgirls emerged from the locker room with stifling defensive intensity and an offensive explosion. They opened the third quarter on a devastating 17-2 run, flipping a 12-point deficit into a three-point lead in less than five minutes. The catalyst was guard Arianna Patton, who connected on three 3-pointers during the surge, two assisted by Jalencia Pierre.

McNeese State’s pressure defense forced Nicholls State into a series of rushed shots and costly turnovers, which the Cowgirls converted into easy transition opportunities. The Colonels, who scored 34 points in the first half, were held to just 12 points in the decisive third quarter. By the time the period ended, McNeese State had outscored Nicholls State 29-12 and held a 51-46 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.

The Cowgirls’ second-half performance was a comprehensive display of their strengths. They held Nicholls State to 18-of-41 shooting from the floor for the game, just 2-of-8 from beyond the arc. McNeese State also forced 17 Colonel turnovers, converting them into 19 points, while committing only nine turnovers themselves. A massive 11-3 advantage on the offensive glass led to 15 second-chance points.

Patton, a guard from Meridian, Mississippi, led all scorers with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, all of which came during the second-half rally. Forward Dakota Howard of Shreveport added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Pierre, from Springfield, Louisiana, orchestrated the offense with 11 points and six assists, while Lexi Alexander of Round Rock, Texas, provided a crucial boost off the bench with 11 points and seven rebounds.

For Nicholls State, McKnight, a Bossier City native, scored 19 points but was limited after her hot start, committing six turnovers. Forward Tanita Swift of Birmingham, Alabama, finished with 12 points, and center Emani Burks of Rockledge, Florida, contributed nine points and five rebounds.

McNeese State’s offensive efficiency, measured at 102.9 points per 100 possessions, ultimately overcame a disparity at the free-throw line, where Nicholls State made 21-of-26 attempts compared to the Cowgirls’ 14-of-17.

The victory extends McNeese State’s winning streak and avenges a prior season result, though the Cowgirls had already defeated Nicholls State 62-51 in Lake Charles on Jan. 8. The game was played before an announced crowd of 422.

McNeese State will look to continue its momentum on the road at New Orleans on Saturday. Nicholls State will aim to regroup at home against Southeastern Louisiana, also on Saturday.
