Retrievers Outlast Bulldogs in Double-Overtime Thriller

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering collapse and an improbable resurrection, the Maryland-Baltimore County women’s basketball team authored a comeback for the ages Thursday afternoon, erasing a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit before outlasting Bryant 65-59 in a double-overtime marathon at Chace Athletic Center.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the final ten minutes of regulation, where the Retrievers transformed a contest that appeared conclusively decided into a nail-biting thriller, setting the stage for their eventual triumph in the extra sessions.

For three quarters, the Bryant Bulldogs, buoyed by a strong home crowd of 525, executed with precision and built a commanding lead. They led 14-14 after one quarter, stretched it to 28-22 at halftime, and dominated the third quarter, taking a 42-32 advantage into the final frame. The Bulldogs’ offense, led by Mimi Rubino’s game-high 22 points and Maranda Nyborg’s 15 points and three assists, flowed smoothly, while their defense stifled UMBC’s attempts to find a rhythm.

The fourth quarter began as an extension of Bryant’s control. A three-pointer by Rubino with 5:26 remaining gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the afternoon at 46-32. The Retrievers, who shot poorly for much of the evening, appeared destined for a road loss, their offense stagnant and time becoming a critical enemy.

What followed was a 14-0 UMBC run over the next five minutes, a stunning display of defensive grit and opportunistic scoring. The Retrievers locked down, forcing the Bulldogs into a series of rushed shots and costly turnovers. Offensively, they chipped away, with Delaney Yarborough providing a crucial interior presence off the bench. The rally was emblematic of a team refusing to surrender, culminating in a defensive stop on Bryant’s final possession of regulation to force overtime, tied at 46-46.

The first overtime was a tense back-and-forth affair, featuring five lead changes. Bryant’s Izzy Adams converted a critical offensive rebound into a layup with 13 seconds left to put the Bulldogs up 57-54. UMBC’s senior guard Carmen Yanez, who orchestrated the offense with 14 points and seven assists in a game-high 48 minutes, was fouled on a three-point attempt with 3 seconds remaining. The guard from the Canary Islands coolly sank all three free throws, sending the game to a second overtime tied at 57-57.

Exhausted but resilient, the Retrievers seized control in the second extra period. Their defense, which held Bryant to just four points in the fourth quarter, again rose to the occasion, limiting the Bulldogs to a single field goal—a layup by Nia Scott early in the period. UMBC’s Jade Tillman, who finished with 18 points, scored five points in the second overtime, including two free throws that gave her team a lead it would not relinquish. Bryant managed only two points in the final five-minute period, missing all five of its field goal attempts after Scott’s layup, as UMBC closed the game on an 8-2 run.

The victory improved UMBC to 14-13 overall, while Bryant fell to 18-10. The game was a stark reversal of fortune from their first meeting on Jan. 15, which UMBC won 55-47. This contest, however, carried far greater dramatic weight due to the scale of the comeback.

Key to the win was UMBC’s ability to generate offense from its core players when it mattered most. Alongside Yanez’s steady hand and Tillman’s scoring, Alaina Williams contributed eight points and critical defense, while Yarborough’s 12 points in just 18 minutes provided a vital spark off the bench. For Bryant, Rubino’s 22 points and Nyborg’s 15-point, 3-assist, 49-minute effort were not enough to withstand UMBC’s relentless late-game pressure.

The Retrievers’ comeback defied statistical probability, overcoming a Interstat ELO system projection that gave Bryant a 79.5 percent chance to win. It also served as a character-defining victory for UMBC, showcasing a resilience that was tested just five days prior in a double-overtime loss at Albany. For Bryant, it was a devastating collapse, a game that slipped away after nearly 35 minutes of control, leaving them to ponder a crucial late-season conference defeat.

Both teams return to action quickly, with UMBC hosting Massachusetts-Lowell and Bryant traveling to NJIT on Saturday.
