Hofstra Dominates UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

STEWART MANOR, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Hofstra women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Sunday afternoon, overwhelming UNC Wilmington 75-43 at the Mack Sports Complex.

The Pride, improving to 6-19 overall, seized control from the opening tip and never relented, holding the Seahawks to a season-low in points. The victory avenged a previous meeting this season, though the margin of dominance was far greater this time. UNC Wilmington fell to 6-20.

The most important part of the game was Hofstra’s suffocating first-half defense, which effectively decided the contest before halftime. The Pride forced 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, converting them into 19 points, while holding the Seahawks to just 18 points on 7-of-30 shooting. This defensive intensity created a transition game that Hofstra exploited repeatedly, building a 39-18 lead at the break that UNC Wilmington never threatened.

Hofstra guard Micaela Carter, the game’s standout performer, led all scorers with 23 points in just 23 minutes of action. She was efficient from the field, hitting 9 of 15 attempts including five 3-pointers, and added three rebounds and two assists. Her offensive outburst marked a significant rebound from her recent outings, where she had scored a combined one point in her last two games.

Carter was instrumental in the first-half blitz, scoring 11 points in the opening quarter as Hofstra raced to a 21-11 lead. She capped the first period with a 3-pointer assisted by Nevaeh Brown, then continued her sharp shooting in the second quarter to help extend the advantage.

She was far from alone. Ema Karim, a guard from Paredes, Portugal, provided 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Guard Sana’a Garrett filled the stat sheet with 11 points, four assists and a game-high four steals, part of a relentless Hofstra defense that tallied 12 steals total and forced 17 UNC Wilmington turnovers.

The Seahawks, conversely, could not find any offensive rhythm. They shot a frigid 27.3% from the field (15 of 55) and 16.7% from 3-point range (3 of 18). Their offensive rating of 63.1 points per 100 possessions underscored the difficulty of operating against Hofstra’s defensive schemes.

UNC Wilmington was led by forward Kylah Silver of Greenville, North Carolina, who fought for 15 points and eight rebounds in 39 minutes. Forward Icyss Storm of Durham, North Carolina, added 11 points and nine rebounds. But the Seahawks managed only four assists as a team, a testament to the stagnant offense created by Hofstra’s pressure.

The Pride’s ball movement and shot selection were superior, resulting in 12 assists and a 50% shooting performance (31 of 62). They also dominated inside, outscoring UNC Wilmington 36-20 in the paint and outrebounding them 42-35.

After taking the 21-point lead into halftime, Hofstra removed any lingering doubt with a 23-point third quarter, pushing the lead to 62-27. A 7-0 run early in the period, capped by another Carter 3-pointer, stretched the margin to 50-27 and the Pride cruised from there, leading by as many as 35 points in the fourth quarter.

The game was a Colonial Athletic Association matchup attended by 493 fans. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Hofstra entered with a 79.4% probability to win, a projection they exceeded with their comprehensive performance.

UNC Wilmington will look to regroup when it hosts William & Mary on March 1. Hofstra returns to action Friday at home against Elon.
