Maryland Dominates Purdue in Big Ten Women’s Basketball Matchup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The Maryland Terrapins delivered a dominant and comprehensive performance Sunday afternoon, overwhelming the Purdue Boilermakers 99-66 in a Big Ten women’s basketball game at Xfinity Center. A crowd of 9,032 watched the Terrapins improve to 22-6 overall, while Purdue fell to 11-15.

The most important part of the game was a decisive second-quarter surge by Maryland that effectively decided the contest before halftime. Leading 22-17 after a competitive first period, the Terrapins unleashed a 29-point offensive explosion in the second quarter while holding Purdue to 15 points. This 29-15 frame stretched a five-point lead into a commanding 51-32 halftime advantage from which the Boilermakers never recovered. Maryland’s defense fueled the run, converting Purdue turnovers into easy transition opportunities and stifling the Boilermakers’ offensive rhythm.

Maryland’s offensive efficiency was staggering. The Terrapins shot 56% from the field, making 37 of 66 attempts, and were equally potent from long range, hitting 12 of 24 three-pointers. They assisted on 10 of their 37 made baskets. Defensively, Maryland’s length and activity were disruptive, registering 10 steals and 9 blocks while forcing 18 Purdue turnovers, which they converted into 21 points.

Purdue, by contrast, struggled to find consistent offense outside of its backcourt. The Boilermakers shot 43% from the floor and committed those 18 turnovers against only 5 assists. Their offensive rating of 93.3 paled in comparison to Maryland’s mark of 131.9.

Sophomore guard Oluchi Okananwa led all scorers with 26 points for Maryland, showcasing relentless drives to the basket. She was complemented by guard Kyndal Walker, who added 18 points and 3 assists. The Terrapins’ depth was on full display as seven players scored at least 11 points. Forward Saylor Poffenbarger filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 4 assists, and a game-high 4 blocks, while guard Yarden Garzon orchestrated the offense with 7 assists.

For Purdue, guards Kiki Smith and Nya Smith shouldered the scoring load. Kiki Smith finished with 19 points, and Nya Smith contributed 18 points and a team-high 6 assists while playing all 40 minutes. However, they received limited support, as no other Boilermaker scored more than 5 points.

The game’s outcome was never in doubt after Maryland’s second-quarter blitz. The Terrapins maintained their intensity after halftime, extending their lead to 77-54 by the end of the third quarter and cruising through the final period. The 33-point margin of victory easily covered the pregame spread where Maryland was favored by 23.5 points. The combined score of 165 points sailed over the over/under line of 147.5.

The victory continues a strong stretch for Maryland, which has won four of its last five conference games. Purdue, mired in a difficult season, has now lost five of its last six contests. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Maryland entered the game with a 96.4% probability to win.

Maryland next hosts Northwestern on Wednesday. Purdue returns home to face Oregon on the same night.
