Hoosiers Rally Past Ducks in Fourth-Quarter Surge

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dramatic momentum shift and a dominant individual performance, the Indiana Hoosiers overcame a second-half deficit with a blistering fourth quarter to defeat the Oregon Ducks 72-65 in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Assembly Hall.

The contest, witnessed by 8,136 fans, pivoted decisively in the final period. After trailing by as many as seven points in the third quarter and entering the fourth clinging to a precarious 44-43 lead, Indiana exploded for 28 points in the final 10 minutes. The Hoosiers’ closing surge was fueled by precision from the free-throw line and timely outside shooting, ultimately overwhelming an Oregon team that had controlled large portions of the game through physical defense and interior play.

The most critical phase of the game began with Indiana leading 49-48 midway through the fourth quarter. The Hoosiers embarked on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes, a stretch that effectively decided the outcome. Shay Ciezki, the Buffalo, New York, native who finished with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists, ignited the run with a 3-pointer assisted by Jerni Kiaku. After an Oregon miss, Lenée Beaumont of Lisle, Illinois, who scored 15 points, converted a layup. Following another defensive stop, Edessa Noyan of Botkyrka, Sweden, added a layup, forcing an Oregon timeout with the Hoosiers ahead 56-48.

Oregon, which had relied heavily on its work in the paint where it held a 34-24 advantage, struggled to answer. The Ducks missed five consecutive field goal attempts during the key Indiana run and were hampered by an offensive rating of 88.3 for the game, a product of their 38% shooting from the field and 14 missed free throws.

The Ducks were carried by a monumental effort from sophomore Ehis Etute. The 6-foot guard from Dudelange, Luxembourg, posted a dominant double-double with 27 points and 17 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. Her relentless work inside kept Oregon afloat, especially during a third quarter where the Ducks held Indiana to just seven points to erase a 37-28 halftime deficit. Astera Tuhina of Prishtina, Kosovo, provided crucial perimeter support with 14 points, while Katie Fiso of Seattle dished out six assists.

Despite Etute’s heroics, Indiana’s efficiency proved superior. The Hoosiers shot 42.3% from the field and, critically, connected on 21 of 26 free throws, an 80.8% clip that starkly contrasted Oregon’s 8-of-14 performance. Indiana also took better care of the ball in the second half, finishing with just 14 turnovers which Oregon converted into 19 points. The Hoosiers’ offensive rating of 99.5 on 72 possessions underscored their more effective shot selection down the stretch.

Ciezki, named the top star for Indiana, controlled the tempo in the final quarter, scoring eight points and handing out two assists during the decisive run. Noyan complemented her with 18 points and eight rebounds, and Maya Makalusky of Fishers, Indiana, added 10 points and seven boards.

The loss dropped Oregon to 19-10 overall, while Indiana improved to 15-12. The game, which surpassed the over/under line of 138.5 with a total of 137 points, saw Indiana outperform its pregame projection as a slight underdog according to Interstat’s ELO system.

Oregon will look to rebound on the road at Purdue on Wednesday. Indiana continues its homestand, hosting Penn State on Saturday.
