Northeastern at North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — In a marathon contest that required three overtimes to decide a winner, the North Carolina A&T Aggies outlasted the Northeastern Huskies 89-86 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night at Corbett Sports Center.

The game, witnessed by 1,044 fans, was a grueling sequel to the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 9, which the Aggies also won in double overtime. This time, an additional five-minute period was needed as North Carolina A&T finally secured the season sweep and improved to 10-15 overall, while Northeastern fell to 7-17.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final seconds of regulation and the first overtime, a stretch defined by missed opportunities, clutch defensive plays, and a dramatic tying basket that extended the drama. With North Carolina A&T leading 67-64 and just over 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Northeastern’s Camryn Collins drove and converted a layup while being fouled. She completed the three-point play at the free-throw line to tie the game with 21 seconds left.

The Aggies had two chances to win in the final six seconds of regulation. After a Northeastern turnover, Paris Locke’s layup attempt was off the mark, and her follow-up tip-in also failed to fall. Chaniya Clark then gathered the offensive rebound and sank a corner three-pointer as time expired, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. However, after official review, the shot was ruled to have been released after the buzzer, forcing overtime tied at 70-70.

The first overtime was a defensive struggle, with both teams managing only four points each. The period featured a pivotal sequence where Northeastern’s Justice Tramble missed two free throws with 51 seconds left that could have given the Huskies the lead. North Carolina A&T’s D’Mya Tucker then drove for a go-ahead layup with 30 seconds remaining. Northeastern’s final possession ended with a shot-clock violation, sending the game to a second overtime tied at 74.

Fatigue became evident in the second overtime, but both teams again traded blows. Tucker’s turnaround jumper and two free throws were answered by Tramble’s driving layups. With the Aggies leading 79-78, Northeastern had the final possession but Yirsy Quéliz’s driving layup was off target, forcing a third overtime.

North Carolina A&T seized control early in the third extra period. Locke scored on consecutive layups to build an 83-79 lead. Northeastern’s Morgan Matthews hit a crucial three-pointer to close the gap to 84-83, and after an Aggies turnover, Matthews scored again inside to give the Huskies an 86-85 lead with 34 seconds left—their first lead since the second quarter.

The Aggies responded immediately. On the ensuing possession, Locke found Clark for her fifth three-pointer of the night, putting North Carolina A&T back ahead 88-86 with 11 seconds remaining. After a Northeastern timeout, Quéliz’s potential game-tying three-point attempt was off the mark. The Huskies secured the offensive rebound but Nariyah Simmons’ last-second three-point heave also missed, and the Aggies secured the defensive board to end the epic.

Clark led all scorers with 22 points for North Carolina A&T. Locke delivered a monumental all-around performance, also scoring 22 points while dishing out 13 assists and grabbing 10 rebounds for a triple-double in 51 minutes of action. Tucker added 15 points, and Elliott Jessup contributed 11.

For Northeastern, Matthews led the way with 15 points. Tramble finished with 18 points and Quéliz added 10. Collins scored 12 points with five assists.

The game featured wild momentum swings from the outset. North Carolina A&T raced to a 23-18 lead after the first quarter, but Northeastern responded with a 21-point second quarter to take a 39-37 halftime advantage. The Huskies’ offense then went cold, managing only seven points in the entire third quarter as the Aggies built a 51-46 lead entering the final period. Northeastern exploded for 24 points in the fourth quarter to force the first of the overtimes.

The victory gives North Carolina A&T a two-game winning streak in the series, both coming in multiple-overtime thrillers. Northeastern will look to rebound quickly, traveling to face Elon on Sunday. North Carolina A&T’s next contest is at Monmouth next Friday.
