Sacramento State at Eastern Washington
CHENEY, Wash. (Interstat) — In a grinding, defensive struggle that saw both teams struggle to find offensive rhythm for three quarters, the Sacramento State women’s basketball team built a commanding lead and then withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by Eastern Washington to secure a 69-60 victory in a Big Sky Conference matchup Thursday afternoon at Reese Court.
The game was defined by a stark contrast in halves. Sacramento State, led by the steady all-around play of guard Benthe Versteeg, methodically constructed a 24-point advantage through three quarters, only to see Eastern Washington explode for 31 points in the final period, turning a potential blowout into a tense finish in front of 2,689 fans.
The most important part of the game was Sacramento State’s dominant middle quarters, where they outscored Eastern Washington 38-23, turning a narrow 7-6 lead after a sloppy first quarter into a 45-29 command entering the final frame. The Hornets’ defense was the catalyst, forcing 18 Eagles turnovers and converting them into 12 points, while their own efficient offense, which shot 46.2% from the field and a stellar 93.8% from the free-throw line, slowly pulled away.
Versteeg, a junior from Amsterdam, Netherlands, was the engine for Sacramento State, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists in 36 minutes. Her orchestration of the offense was pivotal during the Hornets’ decisive run. She was supported by a balanced attack: Keanna Salave’a of Vancouver, Washington, added 12 points and eight rebounds, Rubi Gray of Devonport, Australia, scored 13 points, and Fatoumata Jaiteh of Lynnwood, Washington, contributed 10 points, all while the team committed only 14 turnovers.
Eastern Washington was led by a heroic effort from Kourtney Grossman of Billings, Montana, who scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ella Gallatin of Snohomish, Washington, nearly recorded a triple-double with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists, playing the full 40 minutes. Elyn Bowers of Pinedale, Wyoming, added 12 points and five assists.
The Eagles’ comeback attempt in the fourth quarter was fueled by a sudden surge in three-point shooting and increased defensive pressure. After shooting poorly for three periods, Eastern Washington hit key shots from beyond the arc, with Grossman and Bowers connecting to slice into the large deficit. The Eagles managed to trim the lead to single digits in the final minutes, but Sacramento State’s composure at the free-throw line, where they made 15 of 16 attempts, ultimately sealed the outcome. The Hornets went 9 for 10 from the line in the fourth quarter to quell the rally.
Statistically, the game was won on efficiency. Sacramento State scored 69 points on just 67 possessions, an offensive rating of 103.6, while Eastern Washington managed only 60 points on 71 possessions, an 84.4 rating. The Hornets also dominated inside, outscoring the Eagles 34-22 in the paint.
With the win, Sacramento State evens its season record at 12-15 overall and in conference play. Eastern Washington falls to an identical 12-15 mark. The victory gives Sacramento State a regular-season sweep of the Eagles, having also won 61-54 in Sacramento on Jan. 24.
Sacramento State will look to build momentum when they travel to face Idaho on Saturday. Eastern Washington aims to regroup at home against Portland State, also on Saturday.
