Retrievers Edge Vermont in Defensive Struggle

BURLINGTON, Vt. (Interstat) — Maryland-Baltimore County edged Vermont 46-44 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday night, avenging a loss from three weeks prior.

The Retrievers, who improved to 13-12, used a 16-point third quarter to overturn a 23-20 halftime deficit. Vermont led 12-11 after the first quarter and maintained a narrow advantage until UMBC’s surge. The Catamounts had a chance to tie or win on their final possession but came up short.

The defensive contest saw neither team shoot well. An announced crowd of 862 at Patrick Gymnasium watched Vermont fall short despite holding UMBC to just 10 points in the fourth quarter.
