Coskun Leads Bucknell to Season Sweep Over American

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive third-quarter surge, the Bucknell Bison defeated the American Eagles 58-45 in a Patriot League women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Bender Arena.

The contest, a rematch of a game Bucknell won by an identical score just two weeks prior, was a defensive struggle for the first half before the Bison seized control after halftime. With the victory, Bucknell improved to 9-16 overall, while American fell to 6-20.

The first half was a low-scoring affair characterized by missed shots and tight defense. American’s Charlotte Tuhy provided an early spark, scoring eight of her team-high 17 points in the opening quarter to help the Eagles keep pace. Bucknell, meanwhile, relied on a balanced attack, taking a narrow 20-23 lead into the break after leading by just two points at the end of the first quarter.

The trajectory of the game shifted dramatically in the third period. Bucknell exploded for 21 points, nearly matching their entire first-half output. The Bison’s offensive awakening was spearheaded by Tuana Coskun, the sophomore from Istanbul, Turkey, who scored nine of her game-high 19 points during the quarter. Her stepback jumper and a subsequent assist on an Anna Kunzwiler three-pointer fueled a run that stretched the Bison’s lead.

American, which managed only 11 points in the third, could not find an answer. The Eagles’ offense grew stagnant against Bucknell’s intensified defense, which forced key turnovers and contested shots. Bucknell’s ability to convert those defensive stops into points was pivotal, as they finished the game with an 8-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Bison’s lead ballooned to 41-34 by the end of the third, and they never allowed American to mount a serious threat in the final frame. Any attempt by the Eagles to cut into the deficit was met with a response, often from Coskun or Reese Zemitis, who finished with 13 points. Bucknell maintained a double-digit advantage for much of the fourth quarter, methodically closing out the game at the free-throw line.

Beyond Coskun’s scoring, her all-around performance was crucial. In 35 minutes, she added three assists, a block and a steal. Zemitis, a junior from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, complemented her with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Kunzwiler, from Leesburg, Virginia, directed the offense effectively with four assists.

For American, Tuhy’s 17-point effort included two blocks, but she received limited support. Molly Driscoll was the only other Eagle in double figures, scoring 11 points and dishing three assists. The Eagles shot poorly from the field throughout the night, a key factor in their inability to keep pace once Bucknell found its rhythm.

The game’s attendance was announced as 357. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Bucknell entered the game with a 70.20 percent probability to win.

Bucknell next travels to face Holy Cross on Saturday. American will remain at home to host Lafayette, also on Saturday.
