Northern Arizona Holds Off Sacramento State Rally for Road Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by cold shooting and critical turnovers, the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks built a substantial early lead and then weathered a furious fourth-quarter rally to edge the Sacramento State Hornets 60-55 in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Colberg Court.

The Lumberjacks, who avenged a 19-point home loss to the Hornets just a month prior, improved to 10-17 overall. Sacramento State fell to 11-15.

Northern Arizona’s victory was forged in the game’s opening 15 minutes, as they held Sacramento State to just seven points in the first quarter and led 28-21 at halftime. The Lumberjacks’ defensive pressure was relentless, forcing 10 first-half turnovers and limiting the Hornets to 6-of-29 shooting from three-point range for the game. Sacramento State’s offensive rating of 79.3 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of frustration.

Kayla Williams led all scorers for Northern Arizona with 17 points, including a crucial three-pointer in the fourth quarter to stem the Hornets’ momentum. Naomi White added 11 points, and Madison Watts provided a versatile stat line of 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks, anchoring the defense with several key plays.

The most important sequence of the game, however, came in the final 12 seconds with Northern Arizona clinging to a 58-55 lead. After a chaotic series of timeouts and substitutions, Sacramento State’s Benthe Versteeg connected on a deep three-pointer with 4 seconds remaining to seemingly tie the game. The shot was initially ruled good but was waved off after the officials reviewed and determined Versteeg had stepped out of bounds before the shot, a pivotal turnover.

Northern Arizona’s Naomi White was subsequently fouled and made both free throws with 2 seconds left to seal the five-point victory, capping a wild finish that saw the Hornets’ 22-point fourth-quarter surge fall just short.

Sacramento State was led by Keanna Salave’a, who scored 13 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench, also blocking three shots. Fatoumata Jaiteh posted a double-double with 8 points and 11 rebounds, while Versteeg finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Despite being outrebounded 44-37 and scoring fewer points in the paint, Northern Arizona won the turnover battle, committing 15 to Sacramento State’s 18, and converted those into 19 points. The Lumberjacks also shot 75 percent from the free-throw line, making 12 of 16 attempts, while the Hornets attempted only five free throws, making three.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 402, was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting and provided Northern Arizona with a critical conference road win as the regular season enters its final weeks.
