Army Routs American in Patriot League Women’s Basketball Showdown
WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Army women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance on both ends of the floor, overwhelming American 86-56 in a Patriot League contest Saturday at Christl Arena.
The Black Knights, improving to 20-5 overall and solidifying their position atop the conference, used a dominant third-quarter surge to break open what had been a competitive first half. After leading 35-20 at halftime, Army outscored the Eagles 26-19 in the third period, fueled by a relentless defensive effort and efficient outside shooting.
The most pivotal stretch of the game came early in that third quarter. Leading 37-28, Army unleashed a 17-4 run over a five-minute span that effectively decided the contest. The run was emblematic of the game’s overarching themes: Army’s ability to capitalize on American mistakes and its lethal three-point shooting. The sequence included a three-pointer from Camryn Tade, a layup from Reganne Reardon, and a critical technical foul on American’s Molly Driscoll that led to two more Tade free throws. The Black Knights converted American’s 19 turnovers into 27 points, while the Eagles managed only six points off Army’s 10 giveaways.
Reese Ericson, a 5-foot-6 guard from Lake Oswego, Oregon, led all scorers with 21 points, including five three-pointers. She added five rebounds and three assists, continuing her strong recent form. She was complemented by a double-double from forward Kya Smith of Lubbock, Texas, who tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Camryn Tade of Southlake, Texas, provided a major offensive spark with 22 points, hitting four shots from beyond the arc.
American, which fell to 6-19, was led by Anna Rescifina of Messina, Italy, with 10 points. Laura Nogues of Sabadell, Spain, added eight points and four assists. The Eagles struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against Army’s pressure, shooting just 48.9% from the floor and a costly 53.8% from the free-throw line. Their three total offensive rebounds highlighted a significant disadvantage on the glass, where Army’s 14 offensive boards led to multiple second-chance opportunities.
Army set the tone from the opening tip, with Ericson hitting two quick three-pointers to establish an early lead. American stayed within striking distance in the first quarter, trailing 20-11, but a cold second quarter in which they managed only nine points allowed the Black Knights to build a 15-point halftime cushion.
The statistical disparity was stark. Army shot 52% from three-point range, making 13 of 25 attempts, and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. American, meanwhile, made only 5 of 14 from deep. The Black Knights also dished out 11 assists to American’s six and recorded 11 steals, led by Tade’s three.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Army, which defeated American 63-56 in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 17. The Black Knights have now won three straight and eight of their last nine. American has lost three consecutive games.
A crowd of 665 at Christl Arena saw Army’s offensive efficiency rating soar to 127.8 points per 100 possessions, while American’s languished at 83.4, underscoring the chasm between the two sides on this night.
Army next hosts Loyola Maryland on Wednesday. American returns home to face Bucknell, also on Wednesday.
