Cougars Dominate Huskies in Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

BOSTON (Interstat) — The College of Charleston women’s basketball team, one of the nation’s most efficient squads, delivered a textbook demonstration of its formula for success Friday night, overwhelming Northeastern with a dominant second-half performance to secure a 69-47 victory in Colonial Athletic Association play at Matthews Arena.

In a game that was closer than the final score indicated for a half, the Cougars used a decisive 23-9 third-quarter surge to pull away, showcasing the defensive intensity and offensive balance that has defined their season. The win improved College of Charleston to 20-3 overall and solidified its position atop the conference. Northeastern fell to 6-16.

The first half was a grind, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm. The Cougars led 16-14 after a first quarter characterized by missed shots and turnovers, and took a 26-23 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Northeastern, despite shooting struggles, hung tough through defensive effort and key contributions from Morgan Matthews and Maria Sánchez Pitarch.

The narrative shifted entirely after the break. College of Charleston emerged from halftime with renewed purpose, immediately clamping down on defense. The Huskies managed just nine points in the pivotal third period, their offense stymied by the Cougars’ active hands and disruptive presence in the passing lanes. Charleston converted those defensive stops into easy transition opportunities and open looks, outscoring Northeastern by 14 points in the quarter to build a commanding 49-32 lead.

The most important stretch of the game began early in the third quarter. With Charleston leading 30-28, the Cougars embarked on a 19-4 run over nearly seven minutes that broke the game open. The sequence was fueled by defensive stops and efficient scoring from multiple sources. Taryn Barbot, the game’s leading scorer, was central to the run, but she was aided by timely baskets from Sophia Tougas, Grace Ezebilo, and Tyja Beans. Northeastern, during this span, committed multiple turnovers and missed several contested shots, unable to match Charleston’s elevated tempo and execution.

Taryn Barbot, a 5-foot-10 guard from Floral Park, New York, led all scorers with 22 points, adding three assists, a block and a steal in 40 minutes of action. Her backcourt partner, Taylor Barbot, also of Floral Park, orchestrated the offense with six assists and eight points. The interior was controlled by Grace Ezebilo of Nigeria, who contributed 11 points and a game-high defensive presence, and Tyja Beans of Daytona Beach, Florida, who added 10 points. Sophia Tougas of Glens Falls, New York, provided a critical spark off the bench with 12 points.

For Northeastern, Morgan Matthews of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, led the way with 11 points. Maria Sánchez Pitarch of Rocafort, Spain, added nine points, and Camryn Collins of Foxboro, Massachusetts, also finished with nine.

The statistical story underscored Charleston’s comprehensive performance. The Cougars dominated points in the paint, 36-24, and capitalized heavily on Northeastern’s mistakes, scoring 21 points off turnovers while allowing only eight. Their defense held the Huskies to single-digit scoring in both the second and third quarters.

The victory extended College of Charleston’s winning streak and continued its remarkable season, which now features 20 wins against just three losses. The Cougars have won 11 of their last 12 games. For Northeastern, the loss was its fourth in the last five outings.

The game was played before an intimate crowd of 165 at historic Matthews Arena. Charleston now travels to face Monmouth on Sunday, while Northeastern will host Stony Brook the same day.
