Northern Colorado Holds Off Sacramento State in Big Sky Women’s Basketball
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by opportunistic plays and a decisive third-quarter surge, the Northern Colorado women’s basketball team secured a 62-55 victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference matchup Thursday night at Colberg Court.
The visiting Bears, improving to 18-8 overall, used a 22-point third quarter to break open a tight contest and withstand a late push from the Hornets, who fell to 11-14.
Northern Colorado guard Heather Baymon, a junior from Phoenix, led all scorers with 20 points, including three three-pointers, to pace the Bears’ offense. Her backcourt partner, Gabi Fields of Brownfield, Texas, added eight points and a game-high four assists while anchoring a defensive effort that forced 17 Sacramento State turnovers.
The Hornets were led by Benthe Versteeg of Amsterdam, Netherlands, who finished with 14 points, three assists and three blocks. Rubi Gray of Devonport, Australia, contributed 12 points, and Natalie Picton of Welland, Canada, also scored 12 in the loss.
The game’s pivotal sequence came early in the third quarter. Leading 32-30 at halftime, Northern Colorado opened the second half with a 13-4 run over the first five minutes. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that generated multiple Sacramento State turnovers and translated them into quick points. Baymon hit a three-pointer and Gabi Fields converted a layup and a free throw during the stretch, pushing the Bears’ lead to 45-34.
Sacramento State struggled to find offensive rhythm throughout the period, scoring only 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting and committing five turnovers. Northern Colorado capitalized, scoring 24 points off turnovers for the game compared to 17 for the Hornets.
The Bears had built their halftime lead despite an uneven first half. Both teams shot under 40% from the field in the opening twenty minutes, with Northern Colorado holding a slight edge by connecting on 5-of-10 from three-point range. The Hornets kept pace largely through the long ball as well, hitting 6-of-14 from beyond the arc before halftime.
A key differentiator was Northern Colorado’s work on the glass and at the free-throw line. The Bears out-rebounded Sacramento State 14-7 on the offensive end, leading to 12 second-chance points. Northern Colorado also attempted twice as many free throws, making 13-of-18, while the Hornets went 5-of-9 from the line.
Sacramento State made a final push in the fourth quarter, trimming a 15-point deficit down to seven in the final minute. Brooklyn Taylor of Inglewood, California, provided a spark off the bench with eight points and two blocks, and her layup with 1:38 remaining made the score 60-53. But Northern Colorado’s defense tightened in the closing moments, and the Bears secured the win at the line.
Beyond Baymon’s scoring, Northern Colorado received a balanced contribution. Tatum West of Combine, Texas, scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. The Bears’ depth was evident as their bench outscored Sacramento State’s reserves 15-7.
Despite the loss, Sacramento State’s defense was formidable at the rim, recording eight total blocks. They also matched Northern Colorado’s overall field goal percentage, with both teams finishing 20-for-55 from the floor. The Hornets’ offense, however, was hampered by a season-low four assists and the turnover discrepancy.
The game was a rematch of a Jan. 17 meeting in Greeley, which Northern Colorado won 68-46. The Bears have now won eight of their last ten games.
Northern Colorado continues its road trip at Portland State on Saturday. Sacramento State returns to action at home against Northern Arizona, also on Saturday.
