Eagles Rally Past Ospreys in Defensive ASUN Battle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by grit over grace, Sinai Douglas delivered a monumental performance to will Florida Gulf Coast to a narrow 55-51 victory over North Florida in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at UNF Arena.

The Eagles, who improved to 12-12 overall, overcame a sluggish offensive start and a significant early deficit by locking down in the second half, holding the host Ospreys to just 18 points after halftime. North Florida fell to 8-16.

The game’s pivotal sequence arrived in the final minute, transforming a tense affair into a dramatic finish. Clinging to a 51-49 lead with 33 seconds remaining, Florida Gulf Coast’s Douglas was fouled and sent to the line. The 5-foot-4 guard from Toledo, Ohio, who had shouldered the offensive load all night, calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to four.

North Florida, out of timeouts and with the shot clock off, rushed a play that resulted in a missed layup by Dezuray McGill. Florida Gulf Coast secured the defensive rebound and immediately called timeout with 3.2 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, the Ospreys were forced to foul Jalei Pillow, who sank two more free throws to seal the four-point win, the Eagles’ first victory in their last three outings.

The conclusion capped a remarkable comeback. North Florida, energized by a home crowd of 593, dominated the first quarter, sprinting to an 18-12 lead behind the playmaking of Alonya Waldon and the shooting of Alexa Washington. The Ospreys maintained control for most of the first half, leading by as many as nine points and taking a 33-26 advantage into the locker room.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Florida Gulf Coast’s defense intensified, holding North Florida to 4-of-16 shooting from the floor and forcing six turnovers in the period. The Eagles chipped away, closing the quarter on a 7-2 run to trim the Ospreys’ lead to 44-38.

The final period belonged to Douglas and the Eagles’ relentless defensive pressure. North Florida’s offense completely stalled, managing just two field goals in the quarter’s first nine minutes. A layup by Nay Staton off a turnover gave Florida Gulf Coast its first lead since the opening minutes at 49-48 with just over two minutes to play. After a Washington free throw tied the game for North Florida, Douglas attacked the basket and drew a critical foul on Karyzma Pierre with 33 seconds left, setting up the game-clinching free throws.

Douglas finished with a game-high 23 points, adding two assists in 37 minutes. Her scoring, particularly her ability to drive and draw contact, was the constant in an otherwise uneven Florida Gulf Coast offensive effort. Staton, a 6-foot forward from Jersey City, New Jersey, provided crucial support with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

For North Florida, Washington led the way with 15 points, but was hampered by 5-of-15 shooting. Waldon, from Melbourne, Florida, facilitated the offense with seven assists but scored only five points and committed five turnovers. Jamisyn Stinson added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Pierre contributed nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Statistically, the game was a testament to defense and missed opportunities. Both teams struggled from the field, with numerous shot clock violations and turnovers punctuating the action. North Florida won the battle in the paint 28-24 and points off turnovers 16-15, but their 33% second-half shooting and 18 total turnovers ultimately proved costly.

The victory keeps Florida Gulf Coast in the middle of the ASUN conference race as they head into a quick turnaround at Stetson on Saturday. North Florida, seeking to end a three-game skid, will host Jacksonville on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Fort Myers on February 25.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Florida Gulf Coast entered the game with a 95.2% probability to win, a projection that seemed in jeopardy for much of the night until Douglas and a resolute defensive effort secured the hard-fought road win.
