Rebels Dominate Razorbacks in SEC Women’s Basketball Showdown
OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — The Mississippi women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance from the opening tip, overwhelming Arkansas 80-57 in a Southeastern Conference matchup on Thursday night at The Pavilion.
The Rebels, improving to 20-5 overall, seized control with a dominant first quarter, outscoring the Razorbacks 26-16, and never looked back. Arkansas, which fell to 11-15, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against a stifling Mississippi defense that forced 18 turnovers and blocked nine shots.
The most critical phase of the game was unquestionably the opening period, where Mississippi established a tone of defensive authority and offensive efficiency that Arkansas could never counter. The Rebels opened the game on a 10-2 run, fueled by early three-pointers from Latasha Lattimore and Debreasha Powe. Arkansas managed to stay within striking distance briefly, with a Taleyah Jones three-pointer cutting the deficit to 19-15 with just over four minutes left in the quarter. However, Mississippi closed the frame on a 7-1 surge, capped by a Denim DeShields three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 26-16 lead. That 10-point margin after ten minutes effectively decided the contest, as the Razorbacks would never get closer than nine points for the remainder of the night.
Mississippi’s defense was the story, converting Arkansas’s mistakes into 23 points off turnovers while holding the Razorbacks to just 33.9% shooting from the field. The Rebels also dominated the glass with 13 offensive rebounds leading to 13 second-chance points.
Lattimore, a 6-foot-4 junior from Toronto, was a force on both ends for Mississippi. She scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and recorded a game-high five blocks, altering countless other shots in the paint. Guard Cotie McMahon led all scorers with 21 points, adding five assists. DeShields provided a key spark off the bench with 12 points, and Sira Thienou of Bamako, Mali, contributed 11 points.
For Arkansas, Jones led the way with 16 points, while Bonnie Deas of Melbourne, Australia, added 14. The Razorbacks’ offensive struggles were encapsulated by their 4-for-21 shooting from three-point range and a season-low five assists against 18 turnovers.
Mississippi maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second and third quarters, taking a 55-41 advantage into the final period. The Rebels then put the game fully out of reach with a 12-4 run to start the fourth, extending their lead to 67-45 with 7:18 to play and cruising to the finish.
The Rebels shot 41.3% from the field and dished out 11 assists. Arkansas’s offensive rating of 70.7 on 81 possessions underscored a night of inefficient offense.
The game drew an attendance of 2,484. Mississippi next travels to face Kentucky on Sunday. Arkansas returns home to host Mississippi State on Monday.
