Ohio State Pulls Away From Oregon in Second Half for Road Win
EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — The Ohio State Buckeyes delivered a decisive road victory, overpowering the Oregon Ducks 80-64 in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Buckeyes, improving to 21-3 overall, seized control with a dominant first quarter and never looked back, stifling the Ducks’ offense with relentless defensive pressure. Oregon, which fell to 18-8, struggled to find consistent scoring outside of sporadic three-point shooting and was ultimately undone by 22 turnovers.
Ohio State’s defense set the tone from the opening tip. The Buckeyes forced five Oregon turnovers in the first five minutes, converting them into a 13-5 lead. The catalyst was Kennedy Cambridge, whose activity on both ends sparked the early surge. The sophomore guard from Nashville, Tennessee, recorded three of her game-high six steals in the first quarter, fueling the transition attack.
The most important stretch of the game came in the second quarter, where Ohio State’s defense completely smothered Oregon. The Ducks managed only seven points in the period, shooting 2 of 13 from the field and committing six more turnovers. Ohio State’s lead ballooned to 34-25 by halftime, a margin built not on explosive offense but on a defensive stranglehold that Oregon could not break.
The Buckeyes’ offensive efficiency, finishing with an offensive rating of 106.6 points per 100 possessions compared to Oregon’s 83.4, was led by a trio of standout performers. Elsa Lemmilä, the 6-foot-6 junior from Espoo, Finland, dominated the interior with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting, adding nine rebounds and two blocks. Jaloni Cambridge orchestrated the offense with 19 points and eight assists, while Kennedy Cambridge led all scorers with 20 points, complementing her seven rebounds and six steals.
Oregon, which entered the game as a slight 1.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, never recovered from the second-quarter drought. The Ducks relied heavily on the three-pointer, making 11 of 32 attempts, but shot just 36.7% overall from the field. Sarah Rambus led Oregon with 13 points, while Ari Long added 16 and Mia Jacobs had 13. The Ducks’ 11 offensive rebounds were offset by their inability to take care of the ball, as Ohio State converted 22 Oregon turnovers into 17 points.
The Buckeyes also excelled at getting to the free-throw line and converting, making 17 of 19 attempts. Their work in the paint was decisive, outscoring Oregon 34-18 inside.
After the halftime break, Oregon showed brief signs of life, cutting the deficit to single digits at times in the third quarter behind Long’s outside shooting. However, every Oregon push was met with a timely response from Ohio State, often from Lemmilä in the post or Kennedy Cambridge on the perimeter. A 9-2 run by the Buckeyes to open the fourth quarter, capped by a Kennedy Cambridge three-pointer, extended the lead to 59-46 and effectively sealed the game.
A crowd of 5,371 watched as Ohio State closed out the win, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the final period. The total score of 144 points fell just under the pregame over/under line of 143.5.
The victory extends Ohio State’s winning streak to three games as they continue a challenging stretch of their schedule. The Buckeyes return to Big Ten play next Sunday against Maryland. Oregon, which saw a two-game win streak snapped, will look to regroup on the road next Sunday at Washington.
