Marquette at Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The Marquette women’s basketball team, riding a four-game winning streak, will visit Creighton on Sunday in a Big East Conference matchup at CHI Health Center.
The Golden Eagles (16-7, 8-4 Big East) have found their rhythm in February, most recently defeating Providence 78-61 on Wednesday. They will look to complete a regular-season sweep of the Bluejays after a 67-49 victory in Milwaukee on Jan. 8.
Marquette’s surge has been fueled by guard Skylar Forbes, who is averaging 14.7 points over her last three games. She scored 22 points with five assists in the win over Providence.
The Creighton Bluejays (11-12, 6-6) have also won three straight, including a 64-62 victory over Georgetown on Wednesday. That win was powered by a career-high 31 points from sophomore guard Neleigh Gessert, who has averaged 21.3 points during the winning streak. Her scoring punch will be central to Creighton’s hopes of avenging January’s loss.
While Marquette holds the superior record, the Bluejays have been strong at home in conference play. The Golden Eagles, however, have shown resilience in close games, with three of their last five wins coming by four points or fewer.
The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CST tip-off. Following this contest, Marquette will host Seton Hall on Wednesday. Creighton faces a quick turnaround, beginning a difficult road stretch at Connecticut on Wednesday.
Key Matchup: Marquette’s defensive discipline, which has held opponents to an average of 60.5 points during its streak, will be tested by Gessert’s explosive scoring form. Containing her will be a primary objective for the Golden Eagles’ backcourt.
Sunday’s result will impact the middle of the Big East standings as both teams enter the final weeks of the regular season.
