William & Mary at Elon
ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — A pair of teams seeking consistency in the Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball race will meet Sunday when the Elon Phoenix hosts the William & Mary Tribe at Schar Center.
Elon (10-11 overall) enters the contest after a week off following a 68-54 home victory over Towson on Feb. 1. The Phoenix have alternated wins and losses over their last six games. William & Mary (12-9) arrives having snapped a two-game skid with a narrow 52-51 road win at Towson on Friday.
The matchup features two of the conference’s more unpredictable squads. The Tribe have shown resilience, bouncing back from a three-point loss to Campbell on Jan. 30 with a dominant 79-68 win over UNC Wilmington and the gritty victory at Towson. Their success has often been rooted in defense, holding opponents to 50 points or fewer in three of their last seven games, including a 55-37 win at Hofstra on Jan. 26.
Elon’s fortunes often follow the play of junior guard Laila Anderson, a dynamic scorer on a hot streak. Over her last six games, Anderson is averaging 17.7 points, including a 22-point performance at Hampton and a 21-point effort at College of Charleston. In the win over Towson, she filled the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists in 29 minutes. Support comes from forwards Tyana Walker and Quinzia Fulmore, who combined for 23 points and 17 rebounds in that same game.
William & Mary’s offensive production has been more balanced, though specifics from Friday’s win were not provided. The Tribe will look to continue a positive trend in true road games, where they are 3-1 in their last four CAA away contests, with the only loss a two-point setback at Campbell.
This game is the first of a regular-season series split, with the rematch scheduled for Thursday, March 5, in Williamsburg, Va. Both teams are jockeying for position ahead of the CAA tournament, making Sunday’s contest a critical opportunity to build momentum for the final stretch of the season.
Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon at Schar Center.
