Hoosiers Dominate Boilermakers in Big Ten Rematch

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Interstat) — Shay Ciezki delivered a dominant performance, scoring 29 points and flirting with a triple-double to lead the Indiana Hoosiers to a 74-59 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers in a Big Ten women’s basketball game Sunday at a sold-out Assembly Hall.

Ciezki, the conference’s leading scorer, added 12 rebounds and eight assists, orchestrating the Hoosier offense and controlling the game’s tempo from the opening tip. Her all-around effort, which included a 10-for-10 performance from the free-throw line, propelled Indiana to its 14th win of the season against 10 losses. Purdue fell to 11-13.

The most important part of the game was Indiana’s immediate and sustained defensive pressure, which suffocated Purdue’s offense for the first half and established a lead the Boilermakers could never overcome. The Hoosiers forced eight first-half turnovers and held Purdue to just 20 points on 8-of-33 shooting through the first two quarters, building a 33-20 halftime advantage. Purdue’s offensive rating of 77.9 for the game underscored the effectiveness of Indiana’s defensive game plan.

While Ciezki was the catalyst, she received crucial support from her frontcourt. Sophomore forward Edessa Noyan of Botkyrka, Sweden, posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Nevaeh Caffey of Warrenton, Missouri, contributed 11 points and seven boards. Lenée Beaumont of Lisle, Illinois, provided steady play with eight points, six rebounds and five assists.

Purdue, which had defeated Indiana 80-69 in West Lafayette just two weeks prior, found no such rhythm in the rematch. The Boilermakers shot just 33.3% from the field overall and a frigid 29.2% from beyond the arc. Their offensive struggles were epitomized by a second quarter in which they managed only eight points.

The Boilermakers showed a spark after halftime, primarily through the interior play of Avery Gordon. The 6-foot-7 sophomore from Brownsburg, Indiana, scored 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half, helping Purdue win the third quarter 24-21. A Madison Layden-Zay three-pointer with 1:23 left in the third brought Purdue within 52-48, marking the closest the visitors had been since the first quarter.

That surge, however, was quickly extinguished by Ciezki and the Hoosiers. Indiana answered with a 7-0 run to close the quarter, capped by a Jade Ondineme layup off a Ciezki assist, restoring an 11-point cushion. The Hoosiers then opened the fourth quarter with five straight points to push the lead to 16 and effectively seal the game. Purdue never got within single digits again.

Layden-Zay, from Kokomo, Indiana, finished with 15 points and six assists for Purdue, while Nya Smith of Roswell, Georgia, added nine points. The Boilermakers won the turnover battle 15-8 and scored 21 points off those miscues, but could not offset Indiana’s superior efficiency. The Hoosiers shot 49% from the field and converted 19 of 24 free throws, compared to Purdue’s 6-of-10 showing at the line.

Indiana also dominated in the paint, outscoring Purdue 34-26, and held a significant advantage in offensive rating, 103.6 to 77.9, reflecting a more potent and controlled offensive performance.

The victory improved Indiana’s home record and provided a measure of revenge for the earlier loss to their in-state rival. The announced crowd of 9,110 witnessed a game where the Hoosiers, installed as 6.5-point favorites, covered the spread with a 15-point win. The total score of 133 fell well under the over/under line of 143.5, a testament to the defensive struggle, particularly in the first half.

Indiana next travels to face Southern California on Thursday. Purdue returns home to host Rutgers on Saturday.
